Chapter 8 - The Desperate Measure
A deafening volley of gunfire erupted aggressively from the grand porch of the Vance estate.
Robert instinctively curled his body over Ethan, fully expecting the heavy bullets to tear through his back.
But the little girl stepped calmly in front of them, raising both of her small hands toward the night sky.
A massive, invisible kinetic shield deflected the barrage of bullets, sending hot lead ricocheting wildly into the expensive luxury cars.
Marcus Vance screamed in pure terror and ran frantically back into his fortified mansion, abandoning his heavily armed men.
The girl dropped her hands, utterly exhausted, and told Robert that her energy was almost completely gone.
She revealed that there was one final, highly forbidden method to force the healing without a biological blood match.
It required Robert to intentionally stop his own heart for exactly three minutes to trick the universe's delicate balance.
She would use the immense energy from his temporary death to bridge the biological gap and fully repair Ethan's shattered spine.
But she warned him fiercely that if she lacked the strength to restart his heart, he would permanently remain in the dark void.
Robert looked at the peaceful, motionless face of the boy he had raised, loved, and protected for nine beautiful years.
He kissed Ethan's cold forehead gently and told the little girl that he was entirely ready to make the final trade.
They broke into a nearby emergency medical clinic, bypassing the locked glass doors with a heavy rock from the street.

Robert lay down on the cold steel examination table and allowed the girl to place her glowing hands directly over his heart.
An unbearable, freezing agony violently seized his chest as the magic forcibly crushed his beating heart to a complete stop.
