Chapter 6 - The Transfer

Robert rushed fiercely to his son's bedside, grabbing Ethan's violently shaking shoulders to keep him from falling off the mattress.

The little girl approached the bed slowly, her breathing incredibly shallow and her skin turning a frightening shade of pale gray.

She explained softly that the magic required to fix a broken human spine could not simply be created out of nothing.

The paralysis had to be completely transferred from the innocent child into a willing, biologically compatible adult host.

Robert did not hesitate, fiercely demanding that she take his legs, his spine, and whatever else she needed to save Ethan.

He ripped off his expensive suit jacket and rolled up his sleeve, ready to endure whatever immense pain was coming.

The girl placed one hand on Ethan's burning chest and her other hand firmly onto Robert's waiting arm.

A blinding flash of golden energy surged aggressively through the room, knocking framed pictures completely off the walls.

Robert braced himself for the agonizing pain of paralysis, but absolutely nothing happened to his body.

The golden light abruptly flickered and died, leaving the little girl violently coughing up thick, black blood onto the carpet.

She looked up at Robert with an expression of profound confusion and heartbreaking sorrow.

"You are not his blood," she whispered weakly, clutching her chest as her own life force began to drain away.

Robert felt as though all the oxygen had been violently sucked right out of the penthouse bedroom.

He realized in a horrifying instant that his late wife had taken a devastating, unforgivable secret to her grave.

Ethan was not his biological son, which meant the magical transfer of paralysis was fundamentally, entirely impossible.

The boy's heart monitor suddenly flatlined, emitting a continuous, piercing beep that shattered Robert's entire world.
