Chapter 1 - The Impossible Feeling

Robert Sterling stared at his son in absolute stunned silence.
The expensive crystal water glass in his hand trembled so violently that ice spilled directly onto the pristine white tablecloth.
He vehemently refused to believe the words that had just left Ethan's mouth.
Medical miracles simply did not happen in luxury steakhouses on a random Wednesday afternoon.
"Ethan, stop this nonsense right now," Robert said, his voice completely tight with suppressed emotion.
But the nine-year-old boy looked down at his paralyzed legs with wide, genuinely terrified eyes.
"Dad, I swear they feel like they are burning," Ethan whispered, clutching the leather armrests of his specialized wheelchair.
Robert immediately abandoned his half-eaten filet mignon and dropped to his knees on the plush carpet.
He placed a trembling, hesitant hand on Ethan's left knee, fully expecting the usual cold, lifeless skin.
Instead, a shocking wave of intense, radiating heat pulsed directly through the boy's denim jeans.
Before Robert could logically process this physical impossibility, Ethan's right foot twitched visibly inside his shoe.
Pure panic and a desperate, suffocating wave of hope crashed violently into Robert's chest.
He spun around wildly, screaming at the top of his lungs for the maître d' to stop the little girl in the faded blue hoodie.
Two massive security guards immediately abandoned their posts and sprinted out into the hallway to intercept her.
Robert grabbed Ethan's wheelchair and pushed it fast enough to knock over a chair, racing desperately to catch the mysterious child.
They reached the private elevator bank just as the head of security stood staring blankly at the polished steel doors.
"Mr. Sterling, nobody came through this hallway," the heavily armed guard stammered in complete, utter confusion.
Robert grabbed the larger man firmly by his collar and demanded they review the live security footage that very second.
They huddled around the security tablet, watching the grainy digital video of the girl walking casually toward the elevators.

The footage clearly showed her stepping directly into the empty, enclosed elevator shaft.
But the truly terrifying detail was that the heavy steel doors had never even opened to let her inside.
