Chapter 1 - The Confession in the Hallway

The silence in the hallway felt heavy enough to crush her bones.

Rosa could not look away from Alessandro's intense dark eyes.

Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.

She pulled Lily tighter against her chest to shield her from the tension filling the room.

Alessandro waited for an answer, his imposing figure casting a long shadow over them.

Four years ago, she had saved a wounded man in an abandoned cabin deep in the woods behind the estate.

He had been bleeding, feverish, and hiding from rival hitmen in the dead of night.

She had cleaned his wounds and stayed with him to keep him warm through the freezing storm.

In that suffocating darkness, a desperate and blinding passion had flared between them.

She had slipped away before the sun rose because she was absolutely terrified of his violent world.

She had not realized the wounded stranger was Don Alessandro Moretti until she was hired as a maid months later.

By then, she was already pregnant with Lily and far too afraid to speak the truth.

Now, that carefully guarded secret was completely exposed in the middle of the grand estate.

Alessandro stared at the little girl whose face mirrored his own down to the smallest detail.

His jaw tightened as a storm of realization and fierce protectiveness washed over his features.

He slowly stood up and turned toward his most trusted guards.

He issued a command that shattered the hierarchy of the entire household.

He ordered his men to move Rosa and Lily's belongings into the master suite immediately.

Isabella Romano let out a shriek of pure, unadulterated outrage from the bottom of the staircase.

She screamed that she was his chosen fiancée and refused to be humiliated by a common servant.

Alessandro did not even glance in her direction as he gently helped Rosa to her feet.

He coldly told Isabella that their engagement was suspended until further notice.

He placed a protective hand on the small of Rosa's back and guided her toward the stairs.

Isabella stood completely alone in the marble hallway, her beautiful face twisting into a mask of pure hatred.

She watched the man she was supposed to marry walk away with a maid and a bastard child.

Her manicured hands trembled as she reached into the pocket of her silk robe.

She pulled out her phone and dialed a private Chicago number.

When her ruthless father answered the call, she did not bother saying hello.

She told Vincent Romano to prepare the family soldiers because they were going to war.
