Chapter 9 - The Surrender

Margaret drove the heavy medical syringe directly into the side of Vanessa’s neck, plunging the sedative into her veins.

Vanessa gasped in shock, dropping the scalpel as her hands instinctively reached for her throat.

Her eyes rolled backward, and she collapsed violently onto the hard linoleum floor.

Dominic lunged forward, catching the baby’s incubator before it could slide off the rolling cart.

He held the plastic container tightly to his chest, protecting his daughter with his own broken body.

Margaret calmly kicked Vanessa’s unconscious body aside and adjusted her ruined designer jacket.

"Walter, drag this trash out to the alley for the authorities to find," Margaret commanded as her loyal guard limped into the room.

Dominic carefully set the incubator down and rushed to his wife's side, falling to his knees beside her bed.

He took Carrie’s pale, trembling hand and pressed it fiercely against his tear-stained cheek.

"You saved us, Carrie, you saved all of us," Dominic wept openly, stripping away every ounce of his pride.

Carrie looked at the powerful mafia boss crying beside her, seeing the genuine remorse burning in his dark eyes.

"I didn't do it for you, Dominic," Carrie said softly, her voice still weak from the surgery.

"I know," he choked out, kissing her knuckles repeatedly.

"I am giving it all up, Carrie, the syndicate, the money, the power, I am leaving it all behind tonight."

Carrie stared into his eyes, searching for any trace of the arrogant man who had told her to sleep in the guest room.

She only found a terrified, desperate father who had bled for his family tonight.

"If you ever lie to me again, I will take her and you will never see us again," Carrie promised firmly.

"I swear on my life, you will never have to doubt me again," Dominic vowed, resting his forehead against her hand.

The medical staff finally moved back in, checking Carrie’s vitals and moving the baby to a secure pediatric unit.

For the first time in nine years, the crushing weight of the mafia crown had been lifted from their shoulders.

Dominic signed the final papers severing his ties with the underworld, officially handing the remnants of the empire over to the authorities.

Two weeks later, the sun shone brightly through the large windows of a quiet, heavily guarded beach house in Montauk.
