Chapter 4 - The Escape in the Rain

The red laser dot rested directly over Dominic’s heart, glowing menacingly in the pouring rain.
He threw his body behind the thick stone pillar of the estate’s entrance just as a sniper bullet shattered the marble.
Stone shrapnel rained down on him, slicing across his cheek as he gasped for air.
He was bleeding heavily from his shoulder, his expensive suit soaked with rain and blood.
He crawled toward the garage, relying on sheer adrenaline to keep his body moving.
Meanwhile, at the motel in White Plains, the wooden door splintered under a violent kick.
Walter fired two precise shots through the wood, dropping the first attacker instantly in the hallway.
"Mrs. Marino, you need to follow me right now," Walter ordered, reloading his weapon with practiced speed.
Carrie grabbed her laptop and the manila envelope, her pregnant belly aching from the sudden burst of adrenaline.
Margaret moved with surprising agility, leading Carrie toward the small bathroom at the back of the motel room.
"Walter, the window!" Margaret shouted, pushing Carrie behind the safety of the tiled wall.
Walter shattered the frosted glass of the bathroom window with the butt of his gun.
He climbed out first, securing the alleyway before reaching back to help Carrie through the narrow frame.
Carrie squeezed through the broken window, crying out as a shard of glass sliced her palm.
Margaret followed closely behind, her designer coat covered in motel dust and shattered glass.
They ran down the dark alley, the cold rain soaking Carrie’s maternity dress to her skin.
Daniel Brooks, the family driver who had resigned that morning, suddenly pulled up in a bulletproof black sedan.
"Get in!" Daniel roared, throwing the back door open for the terrified women.
Walter provided covering fire as Carrie and Margaret scrambled into the safety of the armored vehicle.
Tires screeched on the wet asphalt as Daniel sped away from the motel, leaving the Russian hitmen behind.
Carrie leaned back against the leather seat, clutching her stomach as a sharp, paralyzing pain ripped through her abdomen.
It was not fear.
It was a contraction.
She looked down and saw a pool of water soaking the beige leather seat beneath her.
"My water just broke," Carrie gasped, her voice completely breathless with panic.
Margaret’s face turned pale as she realized the baby was coming exactly eight weeks too early.
Carrie’s phone suddenly vibrated in her pocket, displaying Dominic’s name on the cracked screen.
She answered it, tears streaming down her face as she braced for another agonizing contraction.
"Carrie, please tell me you are safe," Dominic’s voice pleaded, sounding weak and out of breath.
"I am in labor, Dominic," Carrie cried out, gripping the door handle tightly.
A sickening sound of metal crashing against metal echoed through the phone speaker.
May you like
"Dominic?" Carrie screamed into the phone.
The line went completely dead.
