Chapter 5 - The Hostile Takeover

The AURAINE Zenith Gala was the most anticipated event of the European social calendar. It was a night of unfathomable excess, where billionaires, supermodels, and royals gathered under the vaulted glass ceilings of the Natural History Museum to celebrate beauty and absolute power.
Veronica stood on the sweeping grand staircase, looking down at the sea of diamonds and custom tuxedos. Her heart was beating a frantic, deadly rhythm against her ribs.
She wore a breathtaking gown of midnight-blue velvet, a crown of woven diamonds resting in her dark hair. She looked like a queen in absolute control. It was the greatest performance of her life.
Across the room, standing by the champagne tower, was Damian Sterling. And standing next to him, wearing an elegant but understated black dress, was Maya.
Elias murmured into Veronica’s earpiece. "Damian has tipped off the press. He's arranged for a microphone on the main stage. He’s going to bring Maya up and let her drop the bomb on live television."
Veronica gripped the marble banister. If Maya spoke, AURAINE would plummet into bankruptcy by morning. Veronica would face federal fraud charges, manslaughter investigations, and utter ruin.
"Let them move toward the stage," Veronica whispered into her hidden microphone. "I have a play."
The music swelled. Damian took the stage, tapping the microphone. The room fell silent, thousands of eyes turning to the ruthless investor.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Damian smiled, his teeth flashing in the stage lights. "AURAINE has always been about legacy. About the truth of beauty. But tonight, we must address a dark truth that has been hidden in the shadows of this company’s foundation. I’d like to invite a very special guest to the stage. Maya... please come up."
Maya stepped forward, clutching the leather journal to her chest. She looked terrified, but the hatred in her eyes propelled her up the stairs.
Damian handed her the microphone. "Tell them, Maya. Tell them who you really are."
Maya took a deep breath, looking directly at Veronica. "My name is Maya. And the founder of this company..."
"Is my family!" Veronica’s voice boomed over the PA system.
Veronica descended the staircase with terrifying, majestic speed, the crowd parting for her like the Red Sea. She walked directly onto the stage, wrapping a sudden, fierce arm around Maya’s shoulders, pulling the stunned girl into a crushing, highly photographed embrace.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Veronica projected, her voice thick with fake, overwhelming emotion. "For twelve years, I have grieved the loss of my brilliant sister, Serena. But tonight, by an absolute miracle, I have found her daughter. My niece. The true heir to the AURAINE empire!"
The flashbulbs erupted in a blinding, chaotic storm. The crowd gasped and then broke into thunderous applause.
Damian’s jaw dropped. Maya tried to pull away, but Veronica’s grip was like iron.

"Smile, Maya," Veronica whispered into the girl’s ear, her voice a lethal hiss. "If you drop that journal now, you aren't exposing a thief. You're exposing your mother’s legacy to a scandal that will bankrupt her life’s work. You want the empire? I just gave it to you. Now smile for the cameras."
Maya looked at the blinding lights, trapped in a gilded cage of her own making. She forced a smile.
