Chapter 4 - Blood and Chemistry

The memories Veronica had meticulously buried twelve years ago clawed their way to the surface as her chauffeured Rolls-Royce navigated the rain-slicked streets of London.
She remembered the cramped basement in Soho. She remembered the acrid smell of burning sulfur and the brilliance of her sister, Serena, hunched over a row of boiling beakers.
“It’s a revolution, Ronnie,” Serena had said, holding up a vial of the first Crimson Ruin. “A lip stain that bonds with the cellular structure. It doesn't fade. It doesn't wash off. It’s permanent.”
“It’s a goldmine,” Veronica had replied, her eyes flashing with dollar signs. “We patent it. We mass-produce it.”
“No!” Serena had argued fiercely. “The synthetic binders are toxic in large doses. I need years to refine the botanical stabilizers. If we rush this, people will get hurt.”
“We don't have years, Serena. We have rent due on Friday.”
The fight had been brutal. The resentment had boiled over. And then, the fire. The police ruled it an accidental chemical combustion. Veronica had escaped. Serena had been trapped behind a fallen beam. Veronica had tried to pull her out—she swore to herself every night that she had tried—but the flames were too hot. She ran. She took the formula notebook from the desk on her way out, and she ran.
She built AURAINE on a lie. She ignored the toxicity reports, buried the negative clinical trials with millions in bribes, and marketed the product to the ultra-wealthy.
The car stopped in front of a modest townhouse in Chelsea. Elias opened the door. Veronica stepped out into the rain.
She knocked twice. The door opened, revealing Maya. The girl looked at Veronica’s soaking silk coat with a mixture of hatred and profound disgust.
"You have a lot of nerve coming here," Maya hissed.
"Let me in, Maya," Veronica said, her voice dropping the corporate façade. "Damian Sterling is going to use you. He doesn't care about your mother. He cares about my stock options."
"I don't care about your stock options either," Maya said, stepping aside to let her in. The living room was plastered with newspaper clippings, AURAINE financial reports, and blueprints of the original Soho lab. "I care about burning your legacy to the ground. You left her to die. And you stole her soul."

"I didn't start the fire!" Veronica shouted, the raw emotion finally cracking her porcelain mask. "I tried to save her!"
"Liar," Maya spat. She walked to a desk and pulled out a heavy, singed leather journal. It was Serena’s original diary. "She knew you were going to steal it. She wrote it all down. Tomorrow night, at your prestigious Zenith Gala, I am handing this journal to the New York Times. I am going to watch the world strip you of everything."
