Chapter 1 - The Phantom Formula

The silence in Veronica Frost’s office was absolute, engineered by acoustic architects who understood that at the pinnacle of power, noise was a liability. From the seventy-fifth floor of the Sterling Zenith, she watched the Thames snake through London like a ribbon of liquid mercury. She took a sip of her black espresso. It was bitter, scalding, and perfect.

She turned away from the glass, her ivory silk dress flowing around her ankles like water, and walked toward her monolithic marble desk. That was when she saw it.

Sitting perfectly in the center of her pristine, aggressively organized desk was a small, unbranded black velvet box.

Veronica’s brow furrowed. Her head of security, Elias, was a former MI6 operative who vetted every atom that entered this floor. Nothing arrived on her desk without a thorough screening, an itinerary, and a sterilized chain of custody.

She reached out, her French-manicured fingers brushing the velvet. She opened the lid.

Inside lay a single, frosted glass vial filled with a dark, iridescent liquid. The color was a devastating, deep crimson with an impossible undercurrent of crushed gold.

Veronica’s heart stopped. The espresso cup slipped from her hand, shattering against the hardwood floor, dark liquid seeping into the fibers of the Persian rug.

It was Crimson Ruin.

It was the exact, unadulterated prototype formula of the lip stain that had launched AURAINE into a billion-dollar empire. But that was impossible. The original formula had been destroyed twelve years ago. It had burned to ash in a cramped, illegal basement laboratory in East London, along with the woman who had invented it: her younger sister, Serena.

With trembling hands, Veronica lifted the vial. Beneath it lay a crisp, white card with a single sentence handwritten in elegant, looping cursive—Serena’s cursive.

Did you really think the fire burned everything, Ronnie?

Veronica closed her eyes, the walls of the seventy-fifth floor suddenly feeling like a crushing, inescapable tomb. The flawless reality she had built on a foundation of bone and ash was about to violently collapse.
