Chapter 7 - The Master's Gambit

The bright spotlight blinded me, but I refused to lower my weapon.

"Let the women and children go, Victor," I demanded loudly.

"You can have the empire, you can have my life, just let them walk."

Victor laughed and lowered his rifle slightly, shaking his head.

"You still don't understand how this game is played, Adrien," he sighed.

"If I leave your heirs alive, they will eventually grow up and hunt me down."

He snapped his fingers, and his men racked the slides of their heavy weapons in unison.

"Kill them all," Victor ordered casually.

Before a single shot could be fired, Sophie suddenly slipped out from behind her mother's legs.

The four-year-old girl bravely marched forward into the narrow space between the two armed groups.

"Sophie, no!" Elena screamed in absolute terror.

Sophie completely ignored her mother and stared directly into the blinding spotlight.

She reached into the deep pocket of her little dress and pulled out the old cloth doll.

She had secretly brought it with her when we fled the nursery.

Victor's men hesitated, confused by the tiny child standing in the crossfire.

Sophie looked at Victor with a deadly serious expression that did not belong on a child's face.

"My mommy says you are a bad man," Sophie stated clearly.

She reached beneath the doll's dress and pressed the hidden switch on the sonic device.

She didn't just tilt it this time; she activated the continuous emergency broadcast mode.

An agonizing, high-frequency screech erupted in the enclosed concrete tunnel.

The sound was amplified violently by the narrow walls, creating a deafening shockwave.

Victor and his men instantly dropped their weapons, clutching their bleeding ears in absolute agony.

The sudden, paralyzing distraction was the exact miracle we desperately needed.

I lunged forward into the chaos, firing my weapon rapidly into the blinded mercenaries.
