Chapter 3 - The House of Ghosts

The estate was completely surrounded by Victor's private army.
I pulled my encrypted phone from my pocket to call my external security perimeter.
The screen displayed a flashing red symbol indicating a total signal jam.
"They brought military-grade signal blockers," Dante said, checking his own radio.
"We are completely on our own, and we have four children to protect," I replied, loading a fresh magazine into my pistol.
We crawled along the balcony floor to avoid the sniper lasers dancing across the stone walls.
I kicked open the side door leading into the guest hallway, gesturing for Elena to move quickly.
The grand hallway was eerily quiet, filled only with the lingering smoke from the nursery explosion.
We moved silently toward the main staircase, hoping to reach the underground garage.
Suddenly, Sophie stopped walking and pointed down at the luxurious Persian carpet.
"Mommy, the rug is wet," the four-year-old whispered.
I looked down and saw a thick trail of fresh blood leading into the master suite.
Dante stepped in front of us, sweeping his weapon across the dark room.
The bodies of my four elite interior guards were piled brutally in the center of the floor.
They had not been killed by a frontal assault from the windows.
They had all been shot cleanly in the back of the head at close range.
"Someone inside the house opened the gates for them," Dante concluded grimly.
Before I could process the betrayal, the lights in the entire mansion suddenly cut out.
We were plunged into absolute, terrifying darkness.
The heavy sound of combat boots echoed loudly on the marble stairs directly beneath us.
Victor's men were already inside, sweeping the house floor by floor.
"We need to get to the panic room in the library," I whispered in the dark.
We rushed down the adjacent servant's corridor, using the moonlight filtering through the windows to guide us.

As we reached the library doors, a figure stepped out from the shadows, blocking our path.
It was Clara, my trusted head nanny, holding a suppressed pistol directly at my chest.
