Chapter 4 - The Nanny's Secret

Clara looked completely different from the sweet, maternal woman who had cared for my children.

Her eyes were cold, and her hand did not shake as she aimed the weapon at me.

"Put the gun down, Clara," I commanded, stepping in front of my screaming triplets.

"I can't do that, Boss," she replied, her voice devoid of any emotion.

"Victor promised me two million dollars and a new life if I planted the devices in the cribs."

She had been the one to let the assassins through the heavily fortified gates.

"You cared for these babies since they were born," I pleaded, trying to buy Dante time to maneuver.

"This is just business, Adrien, nothing personal," Clara sneered.

She tightened her finger on the trigger, preparing to execute me in the dark hallway.

Dante lunged violently to the side, shoving me hard against the wooden paneling.

Clara fired twice in rapid succession.

The suppressed shots made a sickening thud as they struck Dante's tactical vest.

He groaned in pain and collapsed to his knees, dropping his weapon.

I didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second.

I raised my pistol and fired a single shot directly into Clara's shoulder.

She screamed and dropped her gun, falling backward into the library.

I kicked her weapon away and dragged Dante into the room by his collar.

Elena rushed in behind me, carrying Sophie and ushering the crying triplets inside.

I slammed the heavy titanium doors of the library panic room shut and spun the locking wheel.

The pressurized seal hissed, locking us safely inside the impenetrable steel bunker.

I turned on the emergency lights and immediately checked Dante's wounds.

The bullets had shattered his collarbone, but the Kevlar vest had stopped them from piercing his heart.

"I will be fine, Boss," Dante grunted, leaning heavily against the steel wall.

I walked over to the security console and activated the external camera feeds.

The screens flickered to life, showing Victor's mercenaries swarming my beautiful home.

Then I noticed Elena standing unusually close to the emergency ventilation override switch.

She was staring at the control panel with an expression of absolute, paralyzing guilt.

"Elena," I said slowly, "why do you know the access code to that panel?"
