Chapter 1 - The Devil in the Crib

I lifted the corner of the mattress with a shaking hand.

Beneath the soft fabric, a rectangular black device was magnetically attached to the metal springs.

A microscopic red light pulsed in absolute silence.

Thick wires coiled around a pale block of clay.

It was military-grade plastic explosive.

The clicking sound from the doll had been a synchronized arming signal.

My security chief, Dante, grabbed my shoulder and pulled me back.

"Boss, do not touch it," he ordered in a breathless whisper.

He leaned in closer to inspect the complex wiring.

"This is a motion-triggered kinetic bomb, combined with a high-frequency sonic emitter," Dante explained.

The horrific truth hit me instantly.

The high-pitched noise was designed to torture my children.

The agonizing sound forced them to thrash and cry uncontrollably.

Their constant movement was the only thing keeping the kinetic trigger from detonating.

If the babies fell asleep and stopped moving, the bomb would explode.

I looked at my three innocent children, realizing they had been unknowingly fighting for their lives.

"How much time do we have?" I demanded.

"If we remove the children from the cribs, the sudden weight change will trigger the pressure plates," Dante warned.

We were completely trapped by a flawless, diabolical design.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the nursery slammed shut on their own.

The distinct, metallic clang of an electronic deadbolt echoed through the silent room.

Dante rushed to the door and violently pulled the brass handle.

It did not budge.

He unholstered his weapon and aimed it at the electronic keypad on the wall.

Before he could fire, a distorted voice crackled through the nursery's baby monitor.

"If you shoot that keypad, the bomb detonates instantly," the voice warned.

I recognized that cold, raspy voice immediately.

It belonged to Victor, my ruthless former mentor who I had personally banished to Sicily five years ago.

He had somehow returned to exact his revenge.

"Hello, Adrien," Victor chuckled through the small plastic speaker.

"You have exactly three minutes to choose which one of your children gets to live."
