Chapter 2 - The Houseboat

Adrian did not wait for his elite security team to assemble at the mansion.
He grabbed his car keys and drove straight through the torrential rain to the seedy marina where Elias ran an illegal gambling operation.
The heavy rain battered the windshield of his sports car as he raced recklessly down the dark coastal highway.
He had not spoken a single word to his younger brother in twelve years due to a highly toxic, bitter dispute over their late father's inheritance.
Elias had always been fiercely jealous, completely ruthless, and perfectly capable of seeking unimaginable revenge.
Adrian walked down the slick, wooden dock and kicked the door of Elias's private houseboat open without knocking.
Elias was sitting alone at a green felt poker table, counting thick stacks of dirty, crumpled cash.
He looked up with a bored expression, completely unsurprised to see his incredibly wealthy older brother standing in the doorway.
Adrian pulled a heavy handgun from his jacket holster and aimed it directly at his brother's chest.
He demanded to know exactly where Noah was and why Elias had stolen him from the orphanage.
Elias laughed coldly, raising his hands in a mocking, highly sarcastic gesture of surrender.
He freely admitted that he had indeed visited St. Jude's orphanage two months ago under a fake alias.
Elias said he was paid a massive, life-changing sum of money to legally adopt the boy and immediately transfer him to a secondary location.
Adrian cocked the hammer of the gun, his finger tightening dangerously on the trigger as he demanded a name.
Elias sneered and said he never actually met the ultimate buyer face-to-face.
He explained that the entire transaction was orchestrated through anonymous, heavily encrypted emails and offshore wire transfers.
However, Elias proudly claimed he kept a physical copy of the adoption transfer paperwork as personal insurance.
He slowly reached into his wooden desk drawer and pulled out a thick manila folder.
Elias slid the folder across the wooden table toward Adrian, his eyes gleaming with malicious delight.
Adrian kept his gun perfectly steady as he opened the folder with his free left hand.
He looked at the official, notarized signature on the bottom of the ultimate adoption release form.
The breath completely left Adrian's lungs in a sudden, painful rush.

The signature authorizing the transfer of his son did not belong to a random, anonymous stranger.
It clearly belonged to Adrian's beloved, supposedly grief-stricken wife, Claire.
