For Her 55th Birthday / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - The Counter-Strike

I smashed the tracking device with the heavy butt of the pistol.

The plastic cracked and the glowing red light finally died.

Linda’s chilling voice was silenced, but my heart was hammering against my ribs.

Linda was not just a cruel mother-in-law.

She was actively coordinating the hunt.

I realized that running away would never keep me safe.

They would frame me, hunt me, and eventually kill me in the dark.

The only way out was to destroy them completely.

I needed the master financial ledgers that proved their massive money laundering operation.

I knew exactly where Linda kept her primary servers.

Her supposed charity headquarters was located in a heavily guarded office building downtown.

I loaded Emma’s pistol and tucked it securely into the waistband of my jeans.

I drove back to Columbus, slipping into the city under the cover of darkness.

I bypassed the front security desk by picking the lock on the basement loading dock.

I crept silently up the concrete stairwell to the executive floor.

The hallway was completely empty, illuminated only by emergency exit signs.

I approached Linda’s massive corner office and slowly pushed the heavy oak door open.

The room was completely dark, but I could hear heavy, ragged breathing inside.

I raised my gun and flicked on the wall switch.

My jaw dropped in absolute shock.

Linda was sitting in her expensive leather desk chair.

She was brutally beaten, covered in blood, and tightly bound with thick nylon ropes.
