Chapter 10 - The False Victory

I watched from the office window as federal agents swarmed the street below.

Mark was violently thrown against the hood of a police cruiser and securely handcuffed.

He screamed in absolute fury as they shoved him into the back of a federal transport van.

Agent Vance personally escorted me out of the building, assuring me I was completely safe.

The nightmare was finally over.

I was placed in a luxurious, highly secure hotel room paid for by the federal government.

I took a long, hot shower and ordered expensive room service.

I was a free woman, entirely cleared of all fake charges.

I sat on the edge of the plush king-sized bed and opened my laptop.

I logged into a secure banking portal Agent Vance had set up for my witness protection funds.

I expected to see a meager living stipend.

I stared at the glowing screen in absolute, paralyzing disbelief.

The current balance was exactly twenty-five million dollars.

My burner phone rang loudly on the nightstand.

I picked it up, expecting it to be Agent Vance checking in.

It was Mark.

"I told you I always cover my tracks, honey," Mark whispered smoothly through the phone.

"The FBI just decrypted the final, hidden folder on that hard drive."

My blood turned completely to ice.

"Every single offshore account, shell company, and cartel front is legally registered in your maiden name."

"You blindly signed the paperwork years ago when I told you it was for our mortgage."

The sound of heavy tactical boots echoed loudly in the hotel hallway outside my door.

"The FBI isn't putting me in jail, Claire," Mark laughed coldly.

"They are taking me into protective custody as their star witness against the real cartel boss."

"Run."
