Chapter 6 - The Ghost

I did not wait to see who had fired the sniper shot.
I grabbed the silenced pistol from the ground near Emma's lifeless hand.
I snatched her car keys and sprinted toward her newer, faster vehicle.
I threw my backpack into the passenger seat and sped out of the industrial park.
My entire body was shaking violently.
I was now trapped in the middle of a massive criminal war.
I drove for miles until I found a cheap, cash-only motel hidden off the highway.
I locked the thin wooden door and closed the heavy blackout curtains.
I dumped the contents of my backpack onto the stained mattress.
I needed to know how Emma and the sniper had found me so quickly.
I ripped the fabric of the bag apart with my bare hands, searching every seam.
Deep inside the padded shoulder strap, my fingers brushed against something hard.
I pulled out a small, metallic tracking device the size of a coin.
Mark had planted it long before I ever decided to leave.
He had been tracking my every move for months.
I raised Emma's heavy pistol, preparing to smash the tracker into pieces.
Suddenly, a faint static noise hissed from the tiny device.
It was not just a GPS tracker.
It had a built-in microphone and a small speaker.
A cold, familiar voice echoed into the quiet motel room.
May you like
"I see you, Claire."
It was Linda.
