Chapter 2 - The Hijacked Ride

My hands frantically tore through the dark fabric of the backpack.

I dumped the contents onto the backseat of the moving car.

Socks, a spare shirt, and thick stacks of twenty-dollar bills scattered across the leather.

The flash drive was nowhere to be found.

I felt all the blood drain entirely from my face.

Mark could not have found it.

If Mark had found it, he would have killed me before the first guest arrived.

It had to be Linda.

Linda had spent an hour rummaging through the storage room yesterday looking for extra folding chairs.

She must have seen the loose floorboard.

She took my evidence, but left the cash to make it look like a simple robbery.

"Miss, where exactly are we going?" the driver asked.

I looked up at his eyes in the rearview mirror.

"The Greyhound bus station downtown, please," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady.

The driver nodded slowly.

A sudden, sharp click echoed through the quiet interior of the car.

It was the sound of the child safety locks engaging on the rear doors.

The car abruptly swerved across two lanes of traffic, missing the downtown exit entirely.

"Excuse me, you missed the turn," I said, panic rising in my throat.

The driver did not look at me this time.

He reached forward and turned off the glowing GPS screen on his dashboard.

"Your husband called me directly through the app," the driver said coldly.

"He said his wife is having a severe mental breakdown and stole his life savings."

I grabbed the door handle and yanked it, but it was completely jammed.

"He offered me five thousand dollars to bring you right back to the house."
