Chapter 4 - The Wanted Fugitive

I stared at the television screen, completely paralyzed by the sheer audacity of Evelyn Mercer's lie.

The news anchor continued, displaying a fabricated police report that claimed I was armed, unstable, and demanding a massive ransom.

"She flipped the narrative," Damien muttered, pacing across the hardwood floor of the safehouse.

"If the police find us, they will not just arrest you, they will shoot you on sight to protect me."

My stomach lurched as I looked down at Ethan and Noah, who were happily exploring a massive leather couch, oblivious to the fact that their mother was now a hunted fugitive.

"Damien, we have to call the authorities and tell them the truth," I pleaded, my voice trembling with panic.

He stopped pacing and looked at me with a tragic, cynical smile.

"My mother owns the police commissioner, the district attorney, and half the judges in this state," he explained grimly.

"If we surrender, you will be thrown in a black-site holding cell, and the boys will be placed in a foster home hand-picked by Evelyn."

The reality of his words hit me like a physical blow to the chest.

I had spent five years working night shifts at the hospital to build a safe, quiet life for my sons, and Evelyn had destroyed it in a single afternoon.

"So what do we do?" I asked, feeling more helpless than I ever had in my entire life.

Damien walked over to a heavy mahogany desk and pulled out a sleek, encrypted laptop.

"We do the one thing Evelyn Mercer never expects anyone to do," he said, firing up the computer.

"We are going to steal her entire fortune and leave her with absolutely nothing."

For the next three hours, Damien typed furiously, hacking into his own company's secured financial servers.

He explained that his late father had left a hidden contingency clause in the Mercer family trust.

If an heir was born and legally acknowledged, Evelyn's executive control over the multi-billion-dollar empire would instantly evaporate.

"I just need to digitally upload their birth certificates and my DNA verification to the global banking algorithm," Damien explained, his fingers flying across the keys.

"Once the transfer is locked, the banks will freeze Evelyn out permanently."

He pressed the final key, and a loading bar appeared on the screen, slowly inching toward one hundred percent.

Suddenly, the lights in the safehouse flickered and died, plunging us into total darkness.

The heavy steel door of our impenetrable fortress began to glow bright orange as someone on the outside started cutting through it with a blowtorch.
