Chapter 10 - The Legacy

Federal agents swarmed the tarmac like angry hornets, their assault rifles raised and laser sights painted directly on Evelyn's chest.

Realizing she was completely surrounded and stripped of her billionaire immunity, Evelyn dropped the silver handgun onto the metal stairs.

She raised her hands in defeat, her face twisting in pure, unadulterated hatred as the FBI agents forcefully slammed her against the side of the jet in handcuffs.

Damien didn't even look at his mother as she was dragged away; he bypassed the agents and sprinted up the stairs of the aircraft.

I was right behind him, my heart soaring as I saw Ethan and Noah sitting safely inside the luxurious cabin.

"Mommy!" Noah cried, unbuckling his seatbelt and launching his tiny body directly into my open arms.

I buried my face in his soft hair, inhaling the sweet, familiar scent of my babies while sobbing uncontrollably with sheer relief.

Damien dropped to his knees, pulling Ethan into a fierce embrace before wrapping his long arms around Noah and me.

We collapsed together on the floor of the private jet, a tangled, crying mess of a family that had finally survived the storm.

Six months later, the nightmare was officially over, and Evelyn Mercer was sentenced to thirty years in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole.

Damien had successfully dissolved the corrupt remnants of Mercer Corp, using his reclaimed fortune to establish a massive pediatric healthcare foundation in my name.

We were sitting on the porch of our newly purchased farmhouse in upstate New York, watching Ethan and Noah chase fireflies in the twilight.

Damien pulled me close, kissing the top of my head as I leaned against his chest, finally feeling entirely at peace with our beautiful, quiet life.

The rusted mailbox at the end of our long driveway clattered loudly, startling us as a dark courier van sped away into the night.

Damien walked down the driveway and retrieved a single, wax-sealed black envelope with no return address.

He cracked the seal, and his face drained of all color as he pulled out a faded, handwritten letter and a heavily redacted government file.

"Mara," Damien whispered, his voice trembling with a terror I had not heard since the day at the mall.

"My father didn't die in a plane crash fifteen years ago, and according to this letter, he knows exactly where we are."
