Chapter 7 - The Silent Tower

The armored SUV skidded to a halt in the dark alleyway behind the massive Hartwell corporate headquarters.
Daniel handed Victoria a heavy tactical flashlight and a specialized keycard his team had cloned.
"The Russian syndicate operates with absolute lethal precision, so we must remain completely invisible," Daniel whispered.
Victoria nodded silently, her heart pounding violently against her ribs as they approached the service entrance.
The entire skyscraper was completely dark, a towering monument of glass and steel that now felt like a giant tomb.
They swiped the cloned card, slipping inside the freezing loading dock just as a patrol vehicle slowly drove past.
Daniel moved with surprising tactical grace for a billionaire, signaling for Victoria to follow his exact footsteps.
They bypassed the disabled elevators, forced to climb sixty flights of stairs in agonizing, suffocating silence.
By the time they reached the executive floor, Victoria's legs were burning, but adrenaline pushed her forward.
They crouched behind a marble reception desk, observing the terrifying scene unfolding in the main lobby.
Six heavily armed mercenaries in tactical gear were casually patrolling the area, holding suppressed automatic weapons.
Her father, Richard, was nervously standing near the massive titanium vault, holding a digital decryption device.
"Hurry up, old man," the lead mercenary growled in a thick accent, aggressively shoving Richard's shoulder.
"I am typing as fast as I can, the firewall requires a dual authentication," Richard stammered in pure panic.
Daniel leaned close to Victoria's ear, his breath warm against her freezing skin.
"He needs your biometric fingerprint to open the final layer of the vault," Daniel whispered.
Victoria realized with sudden horror why her father had desperately tried to capture her earlier.
Without her physical presence, the Russian mob would never get the physical drives containing the stolen patents.
"We have to create a massive distraction and trap them inside the security perimeter," Daniel instructed.
He pulled a small, military-grade smoke grenade from his jacket pocket, a tool his security team had provided.
"When I throw this, you sprint to the master control panel and initiate the lockdown sequence," he ordered.
Victoria nodded, gripping the cold marble edge of the desk as she prepared to run for her life.
Daniel pulled the pin and hurled the metal canister perfectly into the center of the executive lobby.
Thick, blinding white smoke erupted instantly, plunging the heavily armed mercenaries into total chaotic confusion.
Victoria sprinted blindly through the fog, her fingers desperately flying across the master security keyboard.
She slammed the final lockdown button, causing heavy steel blast doors to crash down over every single exit.
The mercenaries and her father were successfully trapped inside the impenetrable vault corridor.
Victoria cheered silently, turning around to find Daniel emerging from the dissipating smoke.

But her brief moment of victory completely shattered when she saw the crimson blood rapidly soaking through Daniel's white shirt.
A stray bullet had caught him directly in the abdomen, and he collapsed heavily onto the cold floor.
