Chapter 8 - The Infinity Pool

Victoria hit the kitchen floor hard, her heavy tactical pistol sliding violently across the polished marble out of her reach.
I aggressively scrambled to my feet, grabbing the heavy weapon and aiming it directly at the woman who tried to kill us.
"Do not move a single muscle, Victoria, or I swear I will end this right now," I roared with pure, unadulterated fury.
She stared down the barrel of the gun, her perfect mask completely shattered, revealing the desperate, cornered animal underneath.
I slowly backed away, keeping the weapon firmly aimed at her chest as I called for Lily to come out of the pantry.
Lily ran incredibly quickly to my side, grabbing my leg tightly as she stared at the evil woman on the floor.
"We are going out through the patio doors, open them right now," I commanded Victoria, gesturing toward the smart-home control panel.
Victoria slowly stood up, her hands raised in fake surrender, and typed a code into the glowing wall panel.
The heavy steel security shutters covering the massive patio doors slowly grinded open, revealing the dark, glittering infinity pool outside.
I ordered her to walk slowly backward onto the patio, refusing to let her out of my direct line of sight.
The freezing night wind whipped aggressively around us as we stepped out into the dark, incredibly vast backyard.
The edge of the massive infinity pool dropped off entirely into a steep, highly dangerous cliff overlooking the glowing city.
"You really think you have won, David?" Victoria laughed, a harsh, completely breathless sound that chilled me to the bone.
"My husband is watching the perimeter, and you will never make it off this mountain alive," she taunted wickedly.
Suddenly, a massive, deafening explosion aggressively shattered the heavy steel security gates at the front of the mansion.
A heavy armored tactical vehicle violently crashed entirely through the wrought-iron fence and tore into the front courtyard.
I looked away for a tiny, incredibly fatal fraction of a second to see what had caused the massive explosion.
Victoria completely lunged forward, violently grabbing Lily by her small arm and yanking her forcefully toward the pool's edge.
I raised the gun in pure panic, but Victoria had completely positioned my terrified daughter as a tiny human shield.
She backed aggressively up until her expensive heels were balancing dangerously on the absolute very edge of the steep cliff.

"Drop the gun and sign the trust fund documents right now, or I will drop her into the canyon!" Victoria screamed hysterically.
I slowly lowered the heavy weapon, my entire world completely shattering as I watched my crying daughter dangling over the abyss.
