Chapter 2 - The Hidden Documents

I stared at my glowing phone screen in absolute horror as Victoria carried the heavy metal lockbox into the kitchen.
My hands began to shake violently against the leather steering wheel of my parked car.
I watched her punch a complex numerical code into the digital keypad on the front of the strange box.
The heavy lid popped open, and she began sorting through thick stacks of highly official-looking medical files.
I aggressively threw my car into drive and sped recklessly back up the winding roads of the Hollywood Hills.
I barely remembered to turn off the engine before sprinting frantically toward the massive glass front doors of my mansion.
I burst through the entryway, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped wild animal.
Victoria was sitting calmly on the floor of the living room, building a colorful tower of blocks with a completely silent Lily.
She looked up at me with wide, innocent eyes and a perfectly crafted smile of sheer surprise.
"Darling, what are you doing back home so early from your important meeting?" she asked in a sickeningly sweet tone.
I forced myself to breathe evenly, lying through my teeth as I claimed I had forgotten a highly confidential contract in my study.
I quickly scanned the pristine living room, but the metal lockbox was completely nowhere to be found.
I knelt down and hugged Lily tightly, desperately searching her small arms and legs for any signs of physical harm.
She was perfectly unharmed, but her small body was trembling intensely against my chest.
I told Victoria that my meeting was entirely canceled and suggested she take a long, relaxing bath in the master suite.
She kissed my cheek softly, completely unaware that I was entirely onto her twisted game, and headed upstairs.
The moment I heard the heavy bathroom door click shut, I began tearing the kitchen and living room apart.
I frantically checked behind the expensive artwork, under the designer sofas, and inside the massive pantry.
Finally, I noticed a slight scuff mark on the hardwood floor leading directly toward the heavy oak door of the basement wine cellar.
I rushed down the dark, spiraling stone staircase and flipped on the dim overhead lights.
The metal lockbox was cleverly shoved behind a massive, dusty wooden rack of vintage red wine.
I pulled the heavy box out and realized the digital keypad required a six-digit code.
I desperately typed in Victoria's birthday, our anniversary, and even her phone number, but a red light flashed every single time.
In a moment of pure, terrifying realization, I typed in Lily's exact date of birth.
The green light illuminated with a soft beep, and the heavy metal lid slowly clicked open.

Inside, I found a deeply disturbing, legally binding life insurance policy taken out on my four-year-old daughter.
The primary beneficiary listed on the multi-million dollar document was not me, but a completely unknown offshore holding company.
