Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage

The distant gunshot made the baby burst into terrified tears.
The mafia boss immediately wrapped his arms around us, pulling me away from the windows.
It is just my men dealing with an intruder, he said, though his eyes remained constantly alert.
He finally introduced himself as Dante Russo, the undisputed head of the city's largest syndicate.
He led me into a lavish library and poured two glasses of expensive whiskey.
My wife, Isabella, was murdered in a car explosion one year ago, Dante explained softly.
She threw our son out of the vehicle seconds before the blast, saving his life.
I stared at the baby, my heart breaking for the trauma he had endured so early in life.
Dante looked at me, sliding a thick briefcase across the mahogany desk.
There is one million dollars inside that case, Dante offered.
I want you to stay here, act as my son's nanny, and serve as a decoy to draw out my wife's killers.
I shook my head, terrified by the sheer danger of his proposal.
I am a waitress, not a mafia pawn, I argued.
You have no family, no money, and the men who attacked the restaurant already saw your face, Dante warned.
If you leave this estate, you will be dead before the sun rises.
I looked down at the baby, who was now sleeping peacefully against my chest.
I had spent my entire life completely alone, and this child needed someone to protect him.
I accepted the briefcase, sealing my fate within the walls of the dangerous fortress.
Later that evening, a quiet maid named Maria escorted me to a luxurious guest bedroom.
She handed me a folded set of fresh pajamas.
As soon as Dante left the hallway, Maria's expression shifted into sheer panic.
She grabbed my arm, her fingernails digging painfully into my skin.
You need to run away tonight, she whispered frantically.
I pulled back, completely confused by her sudden aggression.
I cannot leave, Dante is protecting me, I replied.
Maria let out a bitter, terrified laugh.

You are not the first lookalike he has brought to this house, she warned.
But you will definitely be the last one to die.
