Chapter 9 - The Slaughter

Marcus Thorne burst into Evelyn’s office, looking like a man who had not slept in days. His custom suit was wrinkled, his tie loosened. The arrogant smirk was gone, replaced by the frantic, wide-eyed stare of a drowning man.

“Call it off!” Marcus screamed, slamming his hands on her desk. “You’re illegally manipulating the market! You’re destroying my company!”

Evelyn remained seated, her posture impeccable. She took a sip of her espresso.

“I am simply executing a strategy, Marcus. It’s exactly what you do to the companies you raid. The only difference is, I do it better.”

“My creditors are calling in my loans!” he yelled, his voice cracking. “I’m facing a total margin call at 4:00 PM. If the stock doesn't bounce back, I’m bankrupt. Personally bankrupt. They’ll take my houses, my cars, everything!”

Evelyn glanced at the Rolex on her wrist. “It is currently 3:45 PM. You have fifteen minutes to find three billion dollars. I suggest you start dialing.”

Marcus stared at her, breathing heavily. He suddenly fell to his knees, the ultimate humiliation for a man of his pride.

“Please,” he begged, his voice a pathetic croak. “Evelyn. I’ll sign whatever you want. I’ll give you Thorne Capital. Just… just leave me my personal assets. Don’t leave me with nothing.”

Evelyn stood up. She walked around the desk and looked down at the broken man on her floor. She felt no pity, no remorse, no joy. Only the clinical satisfaction of an architect watching a flawed building implode.

“When you came into my boardroom and tried to take what was mine,” Evelyn said softly, “you didn’t come for my money. You came for my life’s blood. You tried to humiliate me.”

She turned her back on him and walked to the window, looking out over the city.

“AURELIA is not just a company, Marcus. It is a monument. And monuments are built on the bones of those who try to tear them down.”

The clock on her wall ticked to 4:00 PM.

The closing bell rang on Wall Street.

Evelyn didn't even look back as the security guards dragged a sobbing Marcus Thorne out of her office.
