Chapter 10 - Absolute Zero

A month later, the dust had settled.

Thorne Capital had been liquidated. Marcus Thorne was facing federal indictment for fraud. Julian was in prison for corporate espionage.

AURELIA’s stock had stabilized, and the Lumière Prime settlements were quietly handled, buried beneath a mountain of NDAs and cash. Evelyn had paid back Silas Vance, with interest, reclaiming her absolute fifty-one percent control of her empire.

She was, completely and undeniably, the untouchable sovereign of AURELIA.

It was 11:00 PM on a Friday. The Sterling Building was empty.

Evelyn poured herself a glass of Macallan 25. She walked to the edge of her penthouse office, leaning against the cold glass. The city of Chicago glittered below her, millions of tiny lights moving in perfect, oblivious synchronization.

She had won. She had defeated every enemy, crushed every threat, and secured her legacy.

But as she looked out at the sprawling metropolis, the silence of the massive office pressed in on her. There was no one left to fight. No one left to conquer.

Chloe had gone home hours ago. Julian was gone. She had no family, no partner, no friends outside of the transactional relationships of high society. She had sacrificed every human connection on the altar of her ambition.

Evelyn took a sip of the expensive whiskey. It tasted like ash.

She looked at her reflection in the glass. She was thirty-six, beautiful, ruthless, and terrifyingly wealthy. She was a queen sitting on a throne of glass and gold, breathing the rarefied air of absolute power.

But as she stood there, eighty stories above the world, Evelyn Sterling finally realized the true cost of perfection.

It was absolute, freezing isolation.

She raised her glass to her reflection, the only equal she had left in the world.

"Checkmate," she whispered to the empty room.

The city below continued to pulse, entirely indifferent to the lonely god watching from the sky.
