Chapter 1 - The Viper’s Nest

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open, and Marcus Thorne stepped into the room. He wore a custom Tom Ford suit, a confident smirk plastered across his perfectly stubbled jawline. He looked like a man who had already won. Marcus was a corporate raider, a vulture who bought vulnerable companies, stripped them of their assets, and left the carcasses to rot. He had been circling AURELIA for six months.
“Evelyn,” Marcus said, his voice a smooth, practiced purr. He didn't wait for an invitation to sit. He dropped his leather briefcase onto the mahogany table. “I hope you’re ready to be reasonable. The market is turning. AURELIA’s latest quarter was… uninspired. My acquisition offer is more than generous.”
Evelyn didn’t blink. She remained standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, the Chicago skyline at her back. She let the silence stretch, forcing Marcus to sit in the quiet tension. When she finally turned, her expression was a mask of cold porcelain.
“You misunderstand the nature of this meeting, Marcus,” Evelyn said, walking slowly to the head of the table. She slid a thick, black folder across the polished wood.
Marcus frowned, his smirk faltering slightly as he opened the folder. His eyes scanned the first page, and the color drained from his face.
“What is this?” he demanded, his voice losing its smooth edge.
“That is a detailed ledger of the off-shore accounts you used to artificially inflate the stock price of your holding company, Thorne Capital,” Evelyn replied, her voice barely above a whisper, yet it echoed like a gunshot. “Along with documented proof of your wire transfers to a highly illegal syndicate in Macau.”
Marcus swallowed hard. “You’re bluffing. This is forged.”
“I don’t bluff,” Evelyn said, leaning in, her manicured nails resting lightly on the wood. “I spent the last three months buying up your toxic debt through shell companies. I own your creditors, Marcus. And as of ten minutes ago, I forwarded a copy of that file to the SEC.”
Marcus lunged forward, but Evelyn didn’t flinch.
“You have twenty-four hours to liquidate your shares in AURELIA and transfer them to me at ten cents on the dollar,” she whispered. “Or tomorrow, you won't be a CEO. You'll be a federal inmate.”

As Marcus stormed out, Evelyn’s assistant, a sharp-eyed woman named Chloe, stepped into the room. “It’s done, Ms. Sterling.”
Evelyn looked back out at the city. “No, Chloe. It’s just beginning. He’s a cornered animal now. And cornered animals bite.”
