Chapter 2 - The Mole’s Whisper

Marcus Thorne did not go to the police, nor did he go to the SEC. He went to ground. For three days, Evelyn’s private investigators tracked his digital footprint, but he was a ghost.

Evelyn sat in her penthouse, swirling a glass of Macallan 25. The victory in the boardroom felt hollow. Marcus was too prideful, too arrogant to simply roll over and accept defeat. He had a countermove.

Her phone buzzed. It was Julian, her Chief Financial Officer and, until a year ago, her lover.

“Evelyn, we have a massive problem,” Julian’s voice crackled through the speaker, tight with panic. “The formula for Lumière, our new flagship anti-aging serum… it’s been leaked.”

Evelyn’s blood ran cold. Lumière was the future of AURELIA. It was a revolutionary compound that had taken five years and fifty million dollars in R&D to perfect. It was scheduled for a global launch at the Monaco Gala next week.

“To whom?” Evelyn demanded, standing up, the whiskey forgotten.

“To a generic manufacturing firm in Shenzhen. They’re fast-tracking production. They’ll hit the market two days before our launch, at a quarter of the price. Evelyn, it’s a kill shot.”

“Only three people had access to the final molecular structure,” Evelyn said, her mind racing, calculating the variables. “Me. The head chemist, Dr. Aris. And you.”

“Are you accusing me?” Julian snapped, defensive. “Evelyn, I have millions tied up in AURELIA stock. If the company tanks, I lose everything!”

“Then find out how it happened,” she commanded, hanging up the phone.

She walked to the safe hidden behind a modern art piece in her study. She spun the dial, pulled open the heavy steel door, and extracted a sleek, encrypted hard drive. It contained the original patents and the failsafe codes.

Someone inside her empire was working with Marcus Thorne. Someone she trusted. The fortress hadn't been breached from the outside; the gates had been opened from within.

Evelyn dialed her security chief. “Lock down the R&D labs. Nobody goes in, nobody goes out. And put a wire on Julian’s phone. Now.”
