Chapter 8 - The Ghost in the Rain

The deafening crash of breaking glass stopped Chloe dead in her tracks.
The freezing wind and rain howled into the hospital room, whipping the privacy curtains into an absolute frenzy.
Standing in the shattered window frame, illuminated by the flashing lightning, was a figure dressed in tactical black gear.
He held an assault rifle perfectly leveled at Chloe’s chest with unshakable precision.
Chloe raised her knife, screaming in blind, arrogant fury, and charged foolishly toward the armed intruder.
The man didn't even fire his weapon; instead, he stepped inside, grabbed her wrist, and twisted it with brutal, military precision.
The knife dropped harmlessly to the floor, and the man delivered a swift, devastating strike to Chloe's temple, knocking her completely unconscious.
Emily stared in absolute, paralyzing shock as the stranger turned slowly toward the hospital bed.
He slowly pulled the tactical mask down from his face, revealing weathered features, graying hair, and familiar, loving eyes.
Emily's heart literally stopped beating in her chest for a full second.
"Dad?" Emily whispered, her voice barely a trembling breath in the wind.
Jonathan Vance walked over to his daughter, tears mingling with the cold rain on his weathered face.
"I am so sorry I had to leave you, Emily," Jonathan said softly, gently stroking her damp hair.
"I had to fake my death to dismantle the cartel network from the inside, but I never stopped watching over you."
Emily began to cry uncontrollably, reaching out to hug the father she thought she had buried a year ago.
Liam groaned from the floor, shaking off the lingering effects of the stun gun as he sat up groggily.
"Jonathan? You're alive?" Liam gasped, rubbing his aching temples in sheer disbelief.
"I am, Liam, and I owe you my life for protecting my daughter tonight," Jonathan replied sincerely, offering Liam a hand up.
Jonathan looked down into the bassinet, a soft, amazed smile crossing his hardened face as he looked at baby Lily.
"She is absolutely beautiful, Emily," Jonathan whispered, pride shining in his eyes.
The tender moment was shattered violently when the hospital door was violently kicked open.
Preston stood in the doorway, soaking wet, bleeding from a gunshot wound to his side, and holding a heavy submachine gun.
He had bypassed the federal security by scaling the exterior fire escape in the storm.
Preston stared at Jonathan, his arrogant face twisting into a mask of pure, terrified, undeniable confusion.
"You're dead!" Preston screamed wildly, aiming the weapon erratically around the room.
"I stood there and watched the coroner put you in the ground!"
Jonathan stepped bravely in front of Emily's bed, shielding his daughter and granddaughter with his own body.
"You only saw exactly what I wanted you to see, Preston," Jonathan said with icy, terrifying calm.
"And now, you have absolutely nowhere left to run."
Preston let out a hysterical, broken laugh, pointing the submachine gun directly at Jonathan's chest.
"I don't care if you're a ghost, old man," Preston snarled, his finger tightening lethally on the trigger.

"I am taking my daughter, and I am leaving this miserable city tonight."
Before Preston could pull the trigger, the sound of a heavy helicopter rotor roared deafeningly outside the shattered window.
