Chapter 5 - The Bleeding Truth

The wail of the ambulance siren sliced through the chaotic night air like a jagged, rusty knife.
Emily lay securely strapped to the rolling gurney, a plastic oxygen mask pressing tightly against her pale, sweaty face.
Paramedics rushed her through the emergency bay doors of Chicago General Hospital, shouting medical trauma codes that blurred together.
Liam ran desperately alongside the stretcher, his own gunshot wound hastily bandaged by the tactical field medics.
"She has a severe placental abruption, she is hemorrhaging rapidly and dropping pressure!" a trauma nurse yelled over the noise.
Emily gripped the metal side rail of the bed, her knuckles turning white as another wave of blinding pain tore through her body.
"Save my baby... please just save my baby," Emily begged the doctors, her voice muffled heavily by the plastic mask.
"We are taking you straight to surgery, Mrs. Vance, you need to hold on for us," the lead surgeon assured her urgently.
The heavy double doors of the operating theater swung open violently, and Liam was forced to stop in the hallway.
"I'll be right here, Emily! I promise I won't leave this spot!" Liam shouted as the doors slammed shut in his face.
Inside the freezing operating room, bright surgical lights blinded Emily as nurses transferred her roughly to the operating table.
The anesthesiologist prepared a large syringe, speaking in rapid, hushed tones to the surgical team.
"Wait, look at her toxicological chart from the federal medic," the anesthesiologist suddenly warned, stopping his hand mid-air.
The lead surgeon grabbed the chart, his eyes widening in absolute, undeniable horror.
"She still has active traces of thallium poison circulating in her bloodstream," the surgeon said, looking down at Emily with grim realization.
"If we administer general anesthesia right now, her heart will instantly stop beating."
Emily heard the terrifying words through the haze of agony, absolute terror gripping her chest like an iron fist.
"What does that mean for my baby?" Emily gasped, hot tears streaming down her face.
"It means we cannot put you to sleep for the cesarean section, Emily," the surgeon said gently but with firm authority.
"We have to use a localized spinal block, and you will be completely awake for the entire surgical extraction."
Emily nodded frantically, willing to endure absolutely any pain to save her innocent child's life.
The nurses quickly turned her carefully on her side, inserting the long spinal needle deep into her lower back.
Within minutes, her lower half went completely numb, though the terrifying, pulling pressure remained highly evident.
The surgeon made the first incision, moving with frantic, life-saving speed to beat the clock.
Blood soaked rapidly through the blue surgical drapes as the heart monitors beeped erratically in the background.
"I have the baby," the surgeon announced, pulling a tiny, motionless form from Emily's opened abdomen.
Emily strained her neck to look, waiting desperately for the beautiful, reassuring sound of her newborn's cry.

But the freezing room fell into a horrifying, suffocating silence.
The tiny baby was completely blue, and its delicate chest was not moving at all.
