Chapter 1 - The Shattered Illusion

The crystal chandelier cast a cold, mocking light over the grand ballroom of the Vance estate.
Emily knelt on the polished marble floor, her eight-month pregnant belly resting heavily against her aching thighs.
Her hands trembled uncontrollably as she held a warm porcelain basin of soapy water.
Sitting in the velvet chair before her was Chloe, her husband’s beautiful, sneering executive assistant.
Preston stood nearby, swirling a glass of expensive bourbon with a highly satisfied smirk on his handsome face.
"Maybe now my wife will learn respect," Preston declared to the silent crowd of wealthy executives and socialites.
No one moved a single muscle to defend her.
Not the powerful men who had shaken her father's hand for decades in boardrooms.
Not the glamorous women who used to call Emily their absolute dearest friend.
And certainly not the man who had stood at an altar and vowed to protect her until death.
Emily stared at the soapy water, the bitter taste of public humiliation burning the back of her throat.
She reached out with shaking fingers to touch Chloe’s perfectly manicured foot.
Then, a sharp, distinct vibration echoed from the pocket of her silk maternity gown.
Her phone buzzed once, twice, and then a third time in rapid succession.
It was the secure emergency signal she had been secretly waiting for all night.
Emily slowly pulled her hands away from the porcelain basin, ignoring Chloe's look of disgust.
She placed her palms flat on the cold marble and pushed herself up to a proud, standing position.
The entire ballroom gasped collectively at her sudden, uncharacteristic defiance.
Preston’s arrogant smile vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, dangerous scowl.
"Kneel back down, Emily, before you embarrass yourself further in front of my guests," Preston ordered, his voice echoing fiercely in the quiet room.
Emily did not look down at the floor as she usually did.
She looked directly into Preston's cold, calculating blue eyes without a shred of fear.
"My father left me everything," Emily said, her voice ringing with absolute, crystal clarity.
Preston froze in place, the expensive bourbon sloshing violently over the rim of his crystal glass.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Preston snapped, his polished composure finally slipping.
"The mansion, the company shares, and the money keeping your empire afloat never belonged to you," Emily stated calmly.
Before Preston could formulate a response, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom swung open with a deafening crash.
Two men in sharp gray suits marched into the room, flanked by four armed private security contractors.
They were her father’s personal attorneys, men Preston thought he had bought and silenced months ago.
Preston dropped his glass entirely, the crystal shattering loudly against the immaculate marble floor.
But it wasn't the arrival of the lawyers that made Emily's blood run completely cold.
Chloe suddenly stood up from the velvet chair and laughed a chilling, maniacal laugh that silenced the room.

"You think you won this game, Emily?" Chloe sneered, pulling a silver pistol from her designer handbag.
"Your father didn't die in a tragic car crash, and he isn't actually dead at all."
