Chapter 3 - The Brother's Vow

The swan ice sculpture shattered into a thousand glittering pieces as the orderly hit the marble floor.
Standing in his place was a tall, imposing man with piercing green eyes and a sharp, rugged jawline.
It was Liam, Preston's older brother, who had been completely exiled from the family business five years ago.
"Get your filthy hands off her," Liam growled, stepping protectively in front of Emily's trembling form.
Preston’s face twisted with pure, unadulterated hatred at the sudden sight of his estranged brother.
"What the hell are you doing in my house, Liam?" Preston demanded, his voice cracking with uncontrollable rage.
"I transferred my medical proxy to him three days ago," Emily said, her voice shaking but fiercely resolute.
"When I found the toxic residue in my prenatal vitamins, I knew I couldn't trust you for another second, Preston."
The ballroom fell into a stunned, horrifying silence that was thicker than the summer humidity.
Preston’s eyes darted nervously around the room, realizing his ultimate, darkest secret had just been exposed publicly.
"She's lying, she's completely insane and paranoid!" Preston yelled to the crowd, pointing a shaking finger at her.
Liam reached into his weathered leather jacket and pulled out a stack of certified toxicological reports.
"The lab results confirm daily micro-doses of thallium, identical to the poison found in Emily's father's exhumed tissue," Liam announced clearly for everyone to hear.
Chloe finally lowered her silver pistol slightly, looking at Preston with genuine, bewildered confusion.
"You promised me her father died in a fiery crash, Preston," Chloe whispered, the betrayal evident on her face.
"Shut up, Chloe, and stay out of this!" Preston snapped, losing every single ounce of his polished charm.
The second orderly lunged at Liam with a syringe, but Liam sidestepped effortlessly and drove a brutal knee into the man's stomach.
"I am taking Emily to a safe, federal hospital, and you are going to prison for the rest of your life, little brother," Liam said, turning his broad back on Preston.
Emily felt an overwhelming surge of relief, leaning heavily against Liam's strong, supportive arm.
Suddenly, the sharp, deafening crack of a gunshot echoed brutally through the grand ballroom.
Emily screamed in terror, clutching her ears as the acrid smell of burning sulfur filled the air.
Liam gasped loudly, his hand flying to his shoulder as dark red blood began to rapidly stain his crisp white shirt.
Preston stood ten feet away, holding the smoking silver pistol he had just snatched from Chloe's unsuspecting hand.
"Nobody is leaving this room until Emily signs the corporate transfer codes over to me," Preston stated with a terrifying, calm madness.
He aimed the barrel of the smoking gun directly at Emily's pregnant belly.
"You have exactly ten seconds, my love, or our child won't live to see its first breath."
Emily froze in sheer, paralyzing terror, realizing she was entirely trapped with a madman.

Then, the floor beneath their feet began to tremble violently, shaking the dust from the ceiling.
The grand ballroom's massive glass skylight shattered inward as heavily armed men in black tactical gear descended swiftly from thick repelling ropes.
