Chapter 3 - The River of Lies

The word "accident" hung in the tense air like a highly venomous cloud.
My heart pounded violently in my chest, completely shocked that they had actually brainwashed a child with that twisted narrative.
I looked at Patricia, whose face was now entirely drained of color and covered in a cold sweat.
I asked her if she had seriously told her innocent son that the crash was my fault.
Mark tried to aggressively grab Leo's arm to pull him out of the room, but the brave boy firmly yanked himself away.
Leo yelled that his parents had explicitly told him I went to jail because I almost killed them all in a terrible car crash.
I felt a single, hot tear roll down my cheek as the ultimate betrayal finally sank in.
I turned to the terrified boy and softly told him that it was finally time he heard the absolute truth about that rainy night.
I explained that ten years ago, his mother was the one driving the car, and she was heavily intoxicated after a wild party.
Patricia screamed at me to shut my mouth, desperately trying to cover her son's ears.
I spoke louder, detailing how she had violently swerved off the slippery bridge, plunging the car directly into the freezing river.
I told Leo how I had shattered the back window with my bare hands, dragging his unconscious parents onto the muddy riverbank.
I explained that because Patricia would have lost her nursing license and gone to federal prison, I falsely confessed to being the driver.
I had willingly taken the criminal record, completely sacrificing my own future just to keep their family totally intact.
Our mother began to loudly weep, covering her face as the horrible reality of her golden child was fully exposed.
Mark violently lunged across the table toward me, his fists tightly clenched and ready to strike.

Before he could even reach me, heavy, aggressive pounding echoed from the solid oak front door.
A loud, authoritative voice boomed from the front porch, announcing that it was the local police department executing a warrant.
