Chapter 8 - The Hostage Trade

I pulled the door handle frantically, but the child locks were fully engaged.
Greg had trapped us inside a moving steel cage.
He kept his eyes on the dark road, his voice eerily calm for a man committing kidnapping.
He explained that Vanessa had called him in a panic before I even reached the clinic.
She told him the police were looking for my mother and that their entire luxurious lifestyle was about to evaporate.
Greg did not care about the morality of what they had done to Emma.
He only cared that the video evidence I possessed would freeze their bank accounts and send them to federal prison.
He demanded I hand over my phone and the login credentials to my lawyer’s cloud drive.
I clutched Emma tighter, my mind racing for a way out of the speeding vehicle.
I told Greg that if he hurt us, the police would hunt him down for the rest of his life.
Greg laughed, a cold sound that mirrored the cruelty of my own family.
He said he was not going to hurt us at all.
He was simply driving us to a private airstrip where my father was waiting with a charter plane.
My father was planning to fly me and Emma to a country without an extradition treaty.
We would be kept as permanent prisoners in a gilded cage while they continued to live freely in New York.
I looked out the tinted window, realizing we were entering a heavily wooded, isolated stretch of the highway.
There were no streetlights and no other cars in sight.
I gently laid Emma across the leather seats, ensuring her head was secure.
I slipped off my heavy winter boot and wrapped the thick leather strap of my purse tightly around my knuckles.
I waited until Greg slowed the vehicle to navigate a sharp, dangerous curve near a ravine.
I swung my improvised weapon with every ounce of strength I had left in my exhausted body.
The heavy metal buckle of my purse smashed directly into the back of Greg's skull.

He cried out in pain, his hands slipping wildly from the steering wheel.
The heavy SUV swerved violently off the asphalt and plunged down the steep embankment.
