Chapter 2 - The Counter Report

The cold metal of the handcuffs snapped securely around my wrists.
I stood in the middle of the pediatric wing, surrounded by staring nurses and patients.
I begged Officer Davis to check my hands and my clothes for any signs of grease or burns.
I told him I was upstairs washing a yellow sweatshirt when the incident happened.
He simply read me my Miranda rights in a flat, monotone voice.
Denise stepped forward, trying to intervene on my behalf.
She reminded the officer about the text message from my mother.
Officer Davis shook his head and pulled his notebook from his chest pocket.
He stated that my mother had already explained the text message to the officers at the house.
My mother claimed the word "handle" meant keeping Emma away from my supposed violent outburst.
They had orchestrated a perfect, seamless lie to destroy my life.
I was escorted out of the hospital and shoved into the back of a police cruiser.
The plastic seat was freezing, and my mind was racing with terrifying possibilities.
If I went to jail, Emma would be released directly into their custody.
Vanessa would be the one taking my daughter home.
I arrived at the precinct and was placed in a windowless interrogation room.
A detective with tired eyes came in and threw a file onto the metal table.
He told me my father had hired a high-powered defense attorney for Vanessa.
My family was moving millions of dollars to ensure I took the fall for this crime.
I demanded my one phone call, knowing I had only one person left to trust.
I dialed the number of Emma's father, Mark.
We had been divorced for two years, but he still loved his daughter fiercely.
I frantically explained everything to him before the detective could cut me off.
Mark promised he was leaving work immediately to secure Emma at the hospital.
I leaned back in the metal chair, feeling a tiny sliver of hope.
An hour later, the heavy door to the interrogation room opened again.
The detective did not walk in alone.
Mark stepped into the room, looking down at me with an expression of pure disgust.

He handed the detective a thick stack of medical documents bearing my name.
Mark told the police he was fully prepared to testify about my history of violent, unstable behavior.
