Chapter 3 - The Broken Trust

I stared at my ex-husband as if he had just transformed into a monster.

The medical documents he handed the detective were from marriage counseling sessions we attended years ago.

He had twisted my struggles with postpartum depression into a narrative of explosive violence.

I asked him how much money my father had paid him to lie.

Mark refused to look me in the eyes, adjusting the expensive new watch on his left wrist.

That gold watch was a limited edition piece my father collected.

My own family had bought off my ex-husband within a matter of hours.

The detective smirked, stating they now had a witness establishing a pattern of abuse.

He told me I was being officially charged with aggravated assault on a minor.

I was going to lose my daughter and spend a decade behind bars.

I closed my eyes and desperately replayed the morning of the attack in my head.

I remembered the smell of burning butter and the sound of the metal pan hitting the floor.

But I also remembered something else sitting on the kitchen counter next to the stove.

Vanessa’s husband, Greg, was a tech obsessive who constantly recorded their daughter Lily.

Greg had recently installed a smart-hub display in my mother’s kitchen to video chat with Lily during his business trips.

I opened my eyes and stared directly at the corrupt detective.

I told him the smart-hub on the kitchen counter records twenty-four hours of rolling video to a cloud server.

I demanded they pull the digital footage from the IP address associated with the device.

Mark’s face went completely pale, and he immediately looked toward the door.

The detective hesitated, realizing he could not easily ignore a direct request for digital evidence on record.

He left the room to make a phone call to the cyber division.

I sat in silence, praying Greg had not already deleted the cloud storage.

Twenty minutes later, the door burst open.

It was not the detective who entered.

A man in a sharp suit holding a leather briefcase walked in and introduced himself as my court-appointed attorney.

He leaned across the metal table and whispered that the police had just accessed the cloud server.

The video file existed, and it captured the entire incident perfectly.

But my lawyer did not look happy.

He told me the video proved Vanessa did not throw the hot pan at Emma.

The footage clearly showed someone else standing near the stove holding the weapon.
