Chapter 8 - The Hostage

The tactical men poured into the diner, wearing heavy gas masks and night-vision goggles.
Daniel fired blindly into the thick smoke, managing to drop the first man who entered the room.
Return fire instantly shredded the wooden booths and shattered the remaining glass windows.
María grabbed Emily and crawled desperately toward the diner’s walk-in freezer.
Claire tried to follow them, but she tripped heavily over a broken chair leg in the dark.
A massive tactical soldier grabbed Claire by her hair and dragged her brutally to her feet.
He pressed the barrel of his rifle directly against Claire’s temple.
Thomas walked slowly through the smoke, completely ignoring the chaotic gunfire.
He raised his hand, and his men instantly stopped firing their weapons.
The sudden silence in the ruined diner was absolutely terrifying.
Thomas called out to Daniel, announcing that he had captured the brave 911 dispatcher.
He offered to trade Claire’s life for the little girl and the digital hard drive.
Daniel stepped out from behind the counter, keeping his weapon aimed squarely at Thomas’s chest.
He told Thomas that the FBI already had the files and his entire corrupt empire was completely finished.
Thomas laughed, a hollow sound that proved he was a man with absolutely nothing left to lose.
He cocked his shotgun and aimed it directly at Claire’s terrified face.
Thomas gave Daniel exactly three seconds to surrender the child before he pulled the trigger.
Daniel slowly lowered his weapon, preparing to make a desperate and impossible choice to save Claire.
