Chapter 9 - The Final Standoff

The tattooed man pressed the barrel of his rifle directly against Richard's forehead.

He laughed a dark, cruel laugh, wiping blood and sweat from his blistered face.

He demanded to know how they had disabled the lethal injection vest.

Richard spat a mouthful of blood directly onto the killer's boots, refusing to say a word.

From inside the narrow ventilation shaft, Valerie watched the horrifying scene unfold.

She knew she could not leave Richard behind to be executed.

She told Lila to crawl toward the daylight and never look back.

Then, Valerie slid quietly back out of the vent and dropped into the tunnel.

She picked up the heavy iron grate that had covered the vent opening.

The tattooed man raised his rifle, preparing to pull the trigger and end Richard's life.

Valerie sprinted silently across the damp floor and swung the heavy iron grate like a baseball bat.

The solid metal smashed brutally into the side of the killer's head.

He collapsed immediately, his rifle firing harmlessly into the ceiling as he fell.

Valerie dropped the grate and dragged Richard toward the ventilation shaft.

She pushed him upward, using all her adrenaline to force his heavy body into the narrow space.

The remaining cartel mercenaries were recovering from the steam burns and advancing quickly down the hall.

They raised their weapons, preparing to unleash a hail of bullets into the shaft.

Suddenly, a massive explosion rocked the foundation of the school building.

The ceiling above the mercenaries crumbled, dropping massive chunks of concrete and steel directly onto them.

The FBI had finally arrived, breaching the basement with explosive charges.

Dozens of federal agents in heavy armor swarmed the tunnels, screaming demands for surrender.

The remaining cartel members instantly dropped their weapons and raised their hands in defeat.

An FBI medic rushed over to the ventilation shaft, pulling Richard out and immediately applying pressure to his bleeding shoulder.

Other agents helped Valerie down, wrapping a warm shock blanket tightly around her shivering shoulders.

She looked up toward the end of the shaft and saw a firefighter carrying Lila safely out into the bright autumn sunlight.

The nightmare in the dark was finally coming to an end.

The medic assured Valerie that Richard was going to survive his injuries.

Valerie closed her eyes, letting the exhaustion finally overtake her shaking body.

But as she rested her head against the concrete wall, she heard an agent inspecting the fried vest.

He shouted loudly for his commander, his voice tight with sudden, overwhelming panic.
