Chapter 1 - The Secret Under The Cardigan

The silence in the nurse's office felt heavier than it should have.
Valerie watched the school nurse, a gentle woman named Martha, reach for the incorrectly fastened buttons of Lila's pale blue cardigan.
The little girl flinched violently when Martha's fingers brushed against her chest.
Tears welled up in Lila's brown eyes, threatening to spill over her pale cheeks.
She gripped the edge of the paper-lined cot so hard her small knuckles turned completely white.
Valerie knelt beside the bed and spoke in the softest voice she could manage.
She promised Lila that no one was going to hurt her here.
Lila squeezed her eyes shut and finally let go of the blanket.
Martha slowly undid the first button, then the second, and then the third.
As the soft wool parted, Valerie felt all the air leave her lungs.
This was not a rash, a bruise, or a medical brace.
Strapped tightly across the seven-year-old's fragile ribcage was a thick mesh vest woven with metallic wires.
A small, flat black box was fixed directly over her heart.
A tiny red light blinked steadily in the center of the dark plastic.
Thick synthetic straps dug painfully into the child's shoulders, pulling her posture into an unnatural, rigid line.
The skin around the edges of the vest was bruised black and purple.
It was obvious that the device was fastened much too tightly for a child's body.
Martha backed away from the cot, her hands trembling as she grabbed her medical shears.
Valerie gently touched the edge of the strange metallic fabric.
It was freezing cold and hummed with a faint electrical current.
Lila began to cry softly, whispering that her daddy had put it on her before the sun came up.
She said he promised it was a magic shield that would keep the bad men away from their house.
He told her it would not hurt, but the metal was pinching her skin every time she breathed.
Martha stepped forward with the heavy steel scissors, determined to cut the cruel straps away.
As the metal blades of the shears touched the thickest strap, a sharp electronic beep echoed through the small room.
The black box over Lila's heart suddenly lit up with a glowing digital display.
Red numbers appeared on the screen, counting down from sixty minutes.
Martha dropped the scissors on the floor in pure shock.
Before anyone could speak, the intercom on the wall crackled to life.
The school secretary's voice echoed into the room, sounding unusually strained and breathless.
She announced that Mr. Mercer was waiting in the front lobby to take Lila home early.
Valerie frowned, her mind racing as she looked at the terrified little girl.
She walked over to the clinic window that offered a clear view of the visitor parking lot.
A sleek black SUV with tinted windows was idling near the entrance.
Valerie remembered meeting Richard Mercer at parent-teacher conferences last month.
He was a tall, gentle man with curly brown hair and thick glasses.
She peeked through the blinds to look at the security monitor showing the front desk camera.

The man standing in the lobby was bald, covered in neck tattoos, and wearing a heavy leather jacket.
The stranger slammed his fist on the front desk and demanded to know exactly which room Lila was in.
