Chapter 4 - The Betrayal

Valerie froze, staring at the dark barrel of the police officer's gun in absolute disbelief.

Officer Davis had worked at the elementary school for three years.

He handed out stickers to the kindergartners and directed traffic during morning drop-off.

Now, his eyes were as cold and dead as the stone floor beneath their feet.

He ordered Valerie to step back against the metal lockers and keep her hands raised.

Lila began to cry, trying to pull away from the officer's heavy grip, but he held her firmly by the shoulder.

The little girl complained that the straps of the vest were hurting her even more now.

Officer Davis ignored her pain and pulled a two-way radio from his utility belt.

He spoke into the radio, confirming that he had secured the package in the south hallway.

A gruff voice on the other end ordered him to bring the girl to the boiler room immediately.

Valerie realized with horror that the local police were involved in whatever Richard Mercer was hiding from.

This was not a simple kidnapping, but rather a highly organized conspiracy.

She looked at the timer glowing through Lila's cardigan.

There were only forty-two minutes left before the mysterious device activated.

Officer Davis shoved the barrel of his gun into Valerie's back and ordered them to start walking.

He forced them down a narrow, dimly lit corridor that led to the school's basement maintenance tunnels.

The air grew damp and smelled strongly of dust and old heating oil.

Valerie desperately scanned their surroundings for any possible weapon or escape route.

She noticed the large electrical breaker box mounted on the concrete wall just ahead.

She purposefully tripped over her own feet, falling heavily onto the hard concrete floor.

Officer Davis cursed angrily and stepped forward to drag her back to her feet.

As he reached down, Valerie kicked upward with all her might.

Her heavy winter boot connected sharply with his kneecap.

Davis stumbled backward, his gun firing a wild shot into the ceiling plaster.

Valerie scrambled to her feet and grabbed the heavy metal handle of the main electrical breaker.

She pulled it down with both hands, instantly killing the power to the entire wing of the building.

The emergency strobe lights died, plunging the windowless basement into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

She grabbed Lila's hand in the dark and sprinted blindly down the intersecting maintenance tunnel.

Behind them, Officer Davis began screaming curses and firing blindly into the shadows.

The bullets sparked fiercely against the concrete walls, lighting up the tunnel in brief, terrifying flashes.

Valerie pulled Lila around a sharp corner and ducked behind a massive industrial water heater.

They sat in the dark, listening to the heavy boots of the corrupt officer marching closer.

Suddenly, the device on Lila's chest began vibrating violently.

A tiny automated voice emerged from the black box, announcing that a remote detonation signal had been detected.
