Chapter 3 - The Broken Glass

The heavy brass doorknob rattled against the locked deadbolt.

Valerie held her breath, gripping the cold metal of the fire extinguisher until her fingers ached.

Under the desk, Martha was completely silent, her hands clamped tightly over her own mouth.

The shadow outside the door shifted, and the rattling suddenly stopped.

For a moment, Valerie hoped the intruder had decided to move on to another classroom.

Then a deafening gunshot shattered the silence of the school.

The frosted glass pane in the center of the door exploded inward.

Shards of sharp glass rained down across the clinic floor like deadly hail.

A large hand clad in a black leather glove reached through the jagged hole.

The intruder easily flicked the deadbolt open and pushed the heavy door inward.

The man with the neck tattoos stepped into the dark room, holding a silenced pistol in his right hand.

His boots crunched loudly on the broken glass as he scanned the empty shadows.

Valerie pressed her back flat against the wall, hiding perfectly in the blind spot behind the open door.

The intruder took two steps toward the empty cot, his eyes drawn to the discarded medical scissors.

Valerie knew she would only get one chance to protect the little girl hiding in the closet.

She swung the heavy fire extinguisher with every ounce of strength she possessed.

The solid metal cylinder slammed brutally into the back of the intruder's knees.

The man let out a roar of pain and collapsed onto the floor, his gun skittering across the slick tiles.

Valerie did not hesitate for a single second.

She squeezed the handle of the fire extinguisher, spraying a massive cloud of thick white chemical foam directly into the man's face.

He coughed violently, clawing blindly at his burning eyes as the foam suffocated him.

Valerie dropped the empty canister and bolted toward the supply closet.

She pulled Lila out from behind the boxes and grabbed the child's hand securely.

She yelled for Martha to run, but the nurse was frozen in shock under the desk.

Valerie could not afford to wait.

She dragged Lila out of the clinic and into the flashing red lights of the hallway.

The school was eerily silent, save for the blaring of the emergency alarms.

Valerie pulled Lila toward the back exit that led to the faculty parking lot.

They were halfway down the corridor when a familiar voice called out to them.

Officer Davis, the friendly school resource officer, stepped out from the stairwell.

He was wearing his standard police uniform and looked completely calm amidst the chaos.

Valerie felt a massive wave of relief wash over her.

She ran toward him, shouting that an armed man had broken into the clinic.

Officer Davis smiled warmly and told her that everything was going to be perfectly fine.

He reached out and gently placed his hand on Lila's shoulder.

Then he drew his service weapon and pointed the barrel directly at Valerie's chest.
