Chapter 8 - The Projection Screen

A crystal-clear, high-definition security video began playing on the massive sixty-foot screens above the stage.
The footage showed the front steps of the auditorium from earlier that morning, completely drenched in the pouring rain.
The entire audience gasped as they watched my father step out of the luxury taxi.
They saw me standing in the cold, soaked to the bone, trying to quietly join the graduation line.
The microphone picked up the audio perfectly, echoing my father’s cruel words through the silent hall.
"Don't be selfish, Clara. You're just a nurse's assistant. You're embarrassing us."
The crowd watched in collective horror as my father violently grabbed my arm, shoving me hard against the wet concrete stairs.
They saw Haley laughing and posing with the stolen VIP ticket while I stood shivering in the storm.
My father stared at the screen, all the blood draining from his face as his reputation evaporated in front of a thousand influential people.
"Turn that off!" he screamed, covering his face with his hands to hide from the glaring spotlights.
"That video is out of context, she attacked us first!" my stepmother lied, completely unhinged and screaming at the ceiling.
The crowd erupted into furious booing, throwing their commencement programs and rolled-up papers at my family.
Haley was crying hysterically, desperately trying to hide behind the VIP barricade.
"I'm going to lose all my followers!" she sobbed, clutching her phone as angry comments flooded her live stream.
Dean Bradley raised his hand, and the room slowly quieted down.
"As if the physical assault wasn't enough, you also attempted to steal a medical grant designed to cure pediatric leukemia."
My father suddenly looked up, his eyes widening as the realization finally hit him.
"Cure... leukemia?" he stammered, looking back and forth between the Dean and me.
Arthur Sterling stepped forward, picking up the torn cardboard check from the floor.
"Dr. Hensley here is the sole owner of the patent for the new cellular regeneration formula."
My father's failing manufacturing company was heavily invested in medical supply production.
His entire business model depended on securing the distribution rights for the next big pharmaceutical breakthrough.
He had spent the last three years aggressively hunting for the anonymous researcher who created the leukemia treatment.
He had just shoved that exact researcher into the mud.
"Clara..." my father whispered, his voice trembling as he finally looked at me with respect, born entirely out of fear.
The Chief of Police stepped forward, signaling his officers to move in.
"Richard Hensley, you are under arrest for cyber fraud, assault, and grand larceny," the Chief announced loudly.
My father desperately grabbed the velvet barricade, refusing to let the officers take him away.
"Wait! Clara, please, tell them to stop! If I go to prison, the company dies today!"

I looked down at the man who had tormented me for my entire life, feeling absolutely nothing for him.
"The company died the moment you stole my ticket," I replied coldly.
