Chapter 1 - The Storm Outside

I stood completely frozen beneath the shelter of the Dean's massive black umbrella.
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird trying to escape its cage.
Dean Bradley stared at my soaked hospital scrubs with a mixture of shock and deep concern.
He gently reached out and pointed to the dark red bruises already forming on my wrist.
"Dr. Hensley, who on earth did this to you?" he asked, his voice echoing over the pouring rain.
I looked through the heavy glass doors of the auditorium.
Inside the brightly lit hall, my father and stepmother were settling into the plush velvet seats of the VIP section.
Haley was busy posing for selfies, flashing the gold-embossed ticket that had my ID chip embedded inside it.
"My family," I whispered, the bitter truth tasting like ash in my mouth.
Dean Bradley's expression hardened into a look of pure, unadulterated fury.
He pulled a walkie-talkie from his academic robes and pressed the button.
"Security, I need an escort at the main entrance immediately."
I tried to wipe the rainwater from my face, feeling suddenly very small despite all my achievements.
"Dean Bradley, they don't know I'm a medical student, let alone the valedictorian."
He placed a comforting hand on my trembling shoulder.
"Then I suppose today is going to be a very educational day for them."
Two massive security guards in dark suits rushed out into the rain to meet us.
"Take Dr. Hensley to the private dressing suite so she can prepare her keynote address," the Dean ordered.
The guards flanked me respectfully, treating me like royalty as they guided me through a side entrance.
We bypassed the crowded lobby where my family was currently laughing and drinking complimentary champagne.
I was led into a luxurious suite equipped with a warm shower, a vanity mirror, and my pristine doctoral gown.
Hanging on the door was the solid gold medallion awarded to the top researcher of the decade.
I quickly showered, dried my hair, and slipped into the heavy, velvet-trimmed robes that signified my doctorate.
When I looked in the mirror, the exhausted nurse's assistant was completely gone.
Staring back at me was Dr. Clara Hensley, the brightest medical mind this university had seen in fifty years.
A sharp knock on the door broke my concentration.
Dean Bradley stepped inside, holding his glowing tablet with a deeply troubled expression.
"Clara, we have a massive problem."
He turned the screen around to show me Haley's social media page.
She had just posted a picture of my VIP ticket with a shocking caption.
It read: "So honored to announce that I am the secret recipient of the 10-million-dollar medical research grant today!"
Before I could even process the absurdity of her lie, the Dean swiped to the next screen.
"That's not the worst part, Clara."

He pointed to a digital notification from the university's banking system.
"Someone has just initiated a manual override to transfer your entire grant directly into your father's offshore bank account."
