Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Hall

The entire audience tilted their heads upward to look at the VIP balcony.

A tall, distinguished man with silver hair and an impeccably tailored suit was standing at the railing.

It was Arthur Sterling, the billionaire philanthropist and the primary benefactor of the Vanguard Medical Grant.

He was also the man whose life I had saved in the emergency room just twelve hours ago.

My father looked up at him, his arrogant sneer completely vanishing into thin air.

"Mr. Sterling, you don't understand, this girl is my delinquent daughter," my father stammered, trying to sound respectful.

Arthur Sterling walked slowly down the velvet-lined stairs, the crowd parting for him like the Red Sea.

"I understand perfectly well, Richard," Sterling said, his voice cold enough to freeze water.

My father flinched, clearly terrified that a man of Sterling's magnitude knew his first name.

"Last night, I suffered a massive cardiac event in the lobby of the university hospital," Sterling explained to the silent crowd.

He stopped at the bottom of the stairs, turning to face my trembling family.

"While the senior surgeons were busy arguing over the diagnosis, one young woman correctly identified a rare arterial tear."

Sterling looked up at me on the stage, placing his right hand over his heart in a gesture of profound respect.

"She performed an emergency stabilization procedure that kept me alive long enough to reach the operating room."

My stepmother let out a harsh, mocking laugh that echoed terribly in the quiet room.

"That's impossible, Clara only empties bedpans and fetches coffee for the real doctors!"

Haley nodded vigorously, crossing her arms in defiance.

"She's lying to you, Mr. Sterling, she barely even passed high school."

Sterling didn't even look at them as he pulled a thick, legal-sized folder from his leather briefcase.

"It is fascinating that you think so little of her, considering the documents I hold in my hand."

He opened the folder and pulled out a stack of heavily stamped financial papers.

"Richard, your manufacturing company has been secretly defaulting on its loans for the past three years."

My father's face turned the color of chalk, and he took a sudden, unsteady step backward.

"How... how did you get those files?" my father whispered in sheer terror.

"When I woke up this morning, I decided to look into the family background of the brilliant young doctor who saved my life," Sterling said softly.

He tossed the financial documents onto the floor, letting them scatter across the polished wood.

"I was appalled to discover that her own father was a bankrupt fraud who treats her like a servant."

My stepmother's eyes widened in horror as she realized the true depth of their financial ruin.

Sterling smiled a very dangerous, predatory smile.

"So, I made a few phone calls and bought out every single one of your company's outstanding debts."
