Chapter 6 - The Sister's Betrayal

Rowan stared at the empty space beside Nova, his heart hammering violently against his ribs.

He demanded to know what Marcus had done to his sister.

Marcus laughed loudly, the cruel sound echoing off the rusted steel walls of the warehouse.

He explained that he had absolutely no idea where Selene was hiding.

Selene had not been kidnapped by the ruthless loan shark at all.

She had intentionally sold her own daughter to Marcus in exchange for the forgiveness of her massive debt.

Rowan felt a wave of pure, physical nausea wash over him as the magnitude of her evil fully materialized.

Selene had abandoned her youngest child to a monster just to save her own miserable life.

Nova wept openly, begging her uncle to save her from the terrifying men.

Rowan threw the heavy duffel bag of cash onto the concrete floor between them.

Marcus unzipped the bag, his greedy eyes scanning the bundled stacks of hundred-dollar bills.

He frowned, instantly realizing that the bag was significantly lighter than a million dollars.

Marcus raised the heavy shotgun, aiming it directly at Rowan’s chest.

He told Rowan that partial payments were not acceptable in his line of business.

Rowan raised his hands, desperately trying to negotiate for Nova’s life.

He offered to transfer the remaining balance electronically if Marcus would just let the girl go.

Marcus sneered, stating that electronic transfers left a digital trail for the feds to follow.

Before Marcus could pull the trigger, a loud, explosive crash erupted from the back of the warehouse.

A heavy forklift, driven blindly with a brick on the accelerator, smashed into a massive structural support beam.

The rusted metal groaned and buckled, sending tons of heavy shipping crates crashing to the floor.

The chaotic destruction sent a massive cloud of thick dust billowing through the air.

Marcus and his men were completely blinded by the sudden, suffocating debris.

Rowan did not hesitate for a single second.

He sprinted through the dust cloud, tackling the man holding Nova and pinning him to the ground.

He delivered a brutal punch to the man’s jaw, knocking him completely unconscious.

Rowan grabbed Nova’s hand and dragged her desperately toward the rear exit of the warehouse.

Shotgun blasts echoed wildly through the darkness as Marcus fired blindly into the dust.

Rowan and Nova burst through the rusted metal doors, sprinting across the wet, slippery docks.

They reached Rowan’s truck, diving inside and locking the doors just as Marcus burst out of the warehouse.

Rowan slammed the truck into gear and sped away into the stormy night, leaving the furious criminal behind.

Nova sobbed uncontrollably in the passenger seat, completely shattered by her mother’s ultimate betrayal.

Rowan promised her that she was safe now, and that she would never have to see Selene again.

His phone suddenly buzzed with an emergency alert from the police department.

He glanced at the screen, and his blood turned completely to ice.
