Chapter 6 - The Secret Passageway

Arthur rushed into the bedroom, his eyes locking onto the empty crib and the chilling message carved into the wood.

"The doors were locked from the inside, the elevator never moved, how did someone get in here?!" Arthur yelled, his voice laced with pure desperation.

Clara frantically searched the room, checking the closet, under the bed, and behind the heavy curtains.

"There has to be another way into this apartment, Arthur, look for a hidden door!" Clara cried out, tapping on the drywall desperately.

Arthur ran to the master blueprints he kept locked in his safe, scanning the architectural layout of the penthouse.

"This building was constructed in the 1920s, there's an old maintenance shaft behind the bedroom closet that isn't on the modern grid," Arthur realized aloud.

He grabbed his heavy flashlight and his weapon, rushing back into the room where Leo had vanished.

Arthur smashed the back wall of the closet with the heel of his heavy boot, shattering the thin drywall easily.

A dark, narrow, dusty passageway was revealed, smelling strongly of rust and stale air.

"Stay here, Clara, it is too dangerous for you," Arthur ordered, stepping into the dark void.

"I am not leaving you, that is my baby too!" Clara argued instinctively, before realizing the weight of her own words.

She had spent so much time protecting Leo that she had come to love him as her own flesh and blood.

Arthur didn't argue; he simply nodded, allowing her to follow him closely into the claustrophobic darkness.

They navigated the steep, narrow spiral staircase hidden within the walls of the luxury high-rise.

The stairs led downwards for several floors, finally opening up into a massive, abandoned utility floor completely hidden from the rest of the building.

Dim emergency lights flickered overhead, revealing a chaotic room filled with massive water pipes and old ventilation machinery.

In the center of the room sat a modern, glowing bank of computer monitors displaying live feeds from every single camera inside Arthur's penthouse.

Vivian hadn't just found the safe house; she had been watching them the entire time.

"Look!" Clara pointed toward a heavy metal door at the far end of the utility room.

Through the small reinforced glass window in the door, Clara could see Vivian holding Leo, surrounded by three heavily armed mercenaries.

Marcus, the traitorous head of security, was standing right beside her.

Arthur raised his gun, stepping forward aggressively, completely blinded by rage.

"Don't move, Arthur," a cold voice echoed from the shadows right behind them.

Arthur and Clara spun around to see a masked man pointing a shotgun directly at their heads.

"Drop the weapon, or I paint this concrete floor with your brains," the masked man commanded smoothly.

Arthur slowly lowered his gun, letting it clatter loudly against the concrete floor.

The heavy metal door opened, and Vivian walked out, a triumphant, wicked smile plastered across her beautiful face.

"Welcome to my parlor, Arthur," Vivian purred, holding the crying baby tightly against her shoulder.
