Chapter 2 - The Poisoned Milk

Clara stared at the small glass vial in her trembling hand, her mind racing with terrifying possibilities.
Vivian had not just been careless with the baby; she had brought something deadly into the house.
Clara quickly shoved the vial into her apron pocket and ran out of the nursery to find Arthur.
She rushed down the grand staircase, her footsteps muffled by the thick, luxurious carpet.
Arthur was standing in the kitchen, his back turned to her as he prepared a fresh bottle of warm milk for Leo.
"Sir, you need to see what I just found in Vivian's belongings," Clara said breathlessly.
Arthur turned around, offering her a tired, grateful smile that completely broke her heart.
"Before we talk about anything else, Clara, I need to thank you for saving my son," Arthur said softly.
He held up the warm bottle of milk, gently shaking the formula.
"I just finished mixing this for him, so let me feed him, and then we will call the police to report Vivian."
Clara watched him walk past her toward the stairs, her mind still focused on the vial in her pocket.
She walked over to the kitchen counter to clean up the spilled formula powder Arthur had left behind.
As she wiped the marble counter, she noticed a faint dusting of shimmering white powder mixed into the baby's formula tin.
It looked exactly like the strange substance from the glass vial she had just found upstairs.
Pure panic seized Clara's chest, squeezing the air completely out of her lungs.
Vivian had deliberately contaminated the baby's main food supply before she was kicked out of the mansion.
"Mr. Arthur, stop!" Clara screamed at the top of her lungs, sprinting out of the kitchen.
She took the stairs two at a time, ignoring the burning pain in her scraped knees.
She burst into the nursery just as Arthur was lifting the baby from the crib and raising the bottle to Leo's lips.
Clara did not have time to explain the situation to the confused father.
She lunged forward and smacked the bottle violently out of Arthur's hand.
The plastic bottle hit the far wall, shattering instantly and spilling the warm, poisoned milk all over the expensive rug.
"What is wrong with you, Clara?!" Arthur shouted, startled by her sudden, aggressive outburst.
Clara fell to her knees, gasping for air as she pointed a shaking finger at the puddle of spilled milk.
"The formula is poisoned, sir," Clara choked out, tears of terror streaming down her face.
Arthur stared at her in complete disbelief, clutching the crying baby protectively to his chest.
Suddenly, the heavy iron gates at the front of the estate slammed shut with a deafening mechanical crash.
The mansion's sophisticated security system began blaring a high-pitched alarm, flashing red emergency lights in every single room.
An automated voice echoed through the hidden speakers in the ceiling, delivering a chilling message.
"Warning: External communication lines have been severed."
Someone had manually trapped them inside the massive estate and cut off all contact with the outside world.

Arthur looked toward the large nursery window, his face turning pale in the flashing red light.
Standing on the lawn below, illuminated by the security lights, was a man wearing a dark mask and holding a heavy crowbar.
