Chapter 5 - The Ghost in the House

The armored SUV swerved slightly as Arthur processed the impossible news delivered by the detective.
"Dead? Are you absolutely certain the body in the car is Vivian's?" Arthur demanded, his voice cracking with shock.
"The vehicle is registered to her, and the dental records matched perfectly," the detective confirmed over the speakerphone.
Arthur disconnected the call, the silence in the car feeling heavier and more oppressive than before.
"If Vivian died in that crash, who orchestrated the attack on the mansion tonight?" Clara asked, a fresh wave of terror washing over her.
"Marcus must have gone rogue, trying to steal the estate's wealth for himself," Arthur reasoned, though he sounded entirely unconvinced.
They arrived at the unmarked safe house in the city just as the sun began to peek over the concrete horizon.
It was a high-rise penthouse, accessible only by a private elevator that required a secure biometric scan.
Arthur locked the heavy steel doors behind them, finally allowing himself to collapse onto the velvet sofa in exhaustion.
Clara took Leo into the spare bedroom, gently placing the exhausted infant into a comfortable travel crib.
She set up the baby monitor on the nightstand, turning the volume up before walking back into the living room to help Arthur.
For the first time in twenty-four hours, the world felt quiet, secure, and entirely out of danger.
Clara brewed a pot of strong coffee, handing a steaming mug to Arthur as he stared blankly out the massive penthouse windows.
"We will hire a completely new private security firm tomorrow morning," Arthur promised, taking a slow sip of the dark coffee.
"I will make sure Leo never has to experience fear like this ever again."
Clara smiled warmly, finally feeling a genuine sense of safety settling deep into her bones.
Suddenly, a soft, staticky noise crackled through the baby monitor sitting on the kitchen counter.
Clara froze, listening intently as the static slowly morphed into a clear, recognizable sound.
It was a soft, melodic voice singing a haunting lullaby to the sleeping baby.
"Hush little baby, don't say a word," the voice whispered through the plastic speaker.
Arthur dropped his coffee mug, the ceramic shattering into pieces as the hot liquid splashed across the hardwood floor.
"That's Vivian's voice," Arthur gasped, his face turning pale with absolute horror.
Clara sprinted toward the spare bedroom, her heart pounding frantically against her ribs as she burst through the door.
The bedroom was completely empty, the curtains blowing gently in the morning breeze.
The travel crib was entirely vacant, the blankets pushed aside and completely cold to the touch.
Clara screamed in pure terror, falling to her knees beside the empty crib.

Carved deeply into the expensive wooden headboard of the bed was a fresh, terrifying message.
"Did you really think a car crash could stop a mother from claiming what is hers?"
