Chapter 6 - The Bloodline

The horrifying reality of Mrs. Keller's final words hung heavily in the freezing air like a physical, suffocating weight.
If a rival cartel had already breached the main estate gates, we were absolutely completely surrounded by heavily armed killers.
"We have to keep moving deeper into the woods immediately," Anthony ordered, forcefully dragging Damen back to his shaking feet.
I tightly grabbed Ellie's small hand and ran desperately through the thick, thorny underbrush, completely ignoring the painful scratches on my face.
We ran blindly for what felt like an absolute eternity, guided only by the pale moonlight filtering through the dense canopy.
Ellie began to softly hum that exact same strange, four-note melody again, using it as a brave coping mechanism to calm her intense fear.
Damen suddenly stopped walking, leaning heavily against a large pine tree while staring at me with deep, overwhelming sorrow.
"She sings it exactly the way our beautiful mother used to," Damen whispered softly, completely ignoring the active danger surrounding us.
I froze entirely in my tracks, my heart violently hammering against my ribs as I demanded he finally explain himself.
"I absolutely do not have a brother, Damen, and my parents died in a horrible car crash when I was a teenager," I argued frantically.
Damen slowly shook his head, reaching into his ruined jacket pocket to pull out a small, incredibly old silver locket.
He gently tossed it to me, and my trembling fingers fumbled slightly as I popped the delicate metal clasp open.
Inside the locket was a faded, beautiful photograph of a young Damen standing next to a teenage girl who looked exactly like me.
"You were violently kidnapped by a rival family ten years ago, and the severe trauma completely fractured your memories," Damen explained gently.
He revealed that my real name was Caterina Romano, and he had spent a decade desperately searching the entire country for his missing sister.
He finally found me working as a humble maid, but he purposely kept his identity a secret to protect me from his dangerous enemies.
My entire mind violently reeled as the fabricated memories of my fake childhood suddenly began to crumble like dry sand.
I looked down at Ellie, genuinely horrified by the absolute, crushing weight of the terrifying truth.
"If I am truly a Romano, then that means Ellie is directly tied to the mafia," I whispered in pure, unadulterated terror.
Damen closed his eyes in pain, nodding slowly as a sudden, terrifying realization washed over his pale face.

"She isn't just a Romano, Mara," Damen confessed, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly whisper.
"Ellie is the absolute, direct heir to the rival cartel's entire throne, and her father has finally come to collect her."
