Chapter 4 - The Escape

The thick gray smoke burned my eyes violently and made every single desperate breath feel like inhaling crushed glass.
Atlas began to bark aggressively, pacing frantically in circles around Ellie to protect her from the unseen, suffocating threat.
"The ventilation system is completely flooding the room with carbon monoxide!" Anthony yelled over the blaring security alarms.
I quickly ripped the clean cotton towel from my apron, furiously soaking it with water from my cleaning bucket.
I pressed the wet fabric securely over Ellie's small face, instructing her to stay as close to the floor as humanly possible.
Damen violently coughed again, pointing a trembling finger toward the massive, floor-to-ceiling cedar bookcase on the far wall.
"Pull the third book on the second shelf from the left," Damen choked out, dropping heavily to his knees.
Anthony immediately rushed to the heavy wooden shelves, frantically scanning the dusty leather bindings for the correct book.
He aggressively yanked a thick red volume titled 'The Wealth of Nations', and a loud mechanical click echoed through the smoke.
The entire massive bookcase smoothly swung inward, revealing a dark, incredibly narrow stone passageway completely hidden in the walls.
"Get the girl in there right now!" Anthony shouted, grabbing Damen by his expensive belt to physically drag him toward safety.
I tightly grabbed Ellie's small hand and practically threw us both into the pitch-black, freezing stone tunnel.
Atlas bolted in directly behind us, his massive body brushing comfortingly against my trembling legs in the absolute darkness.
Anthony managed to drag Damen safely inside just as a violent, explosive flash of orange fire erupted back in the study.
He aggressively slammed the heavy bookcase shut, completely sealing us away from the burning inferno that was meant to be our tomb.
We sat in the freezing darkness for several long, agonizing minutes, listening to the muffled sounds of destruction echoing from the room we just escaped.
"This hidden tunnel eventually leads completely outside the estate walls, far past the security perimeter," Damen explained between ragged, painful breaths.
Anthony clicked on a small tactical flashlight, casting a bright, harsh beam down the damp, incredibly creepy stone corridor.
We moved slowly and silently through the secret passage, the heavy air smelling entirely of old dirt and stagnant water.
Ellie gripped my hand incredibly tight, bravely refusing to cry despite the horrifying chaos completely surrounding her.
After twenty exhausting minutes of walking in the freezing dark, we finally reached a heavy iron door covered in thick, green moss.
Anthony cautiously pushed the heavy metal door open, revealing the incredibly dense, foggy woods surrounding the edge of the sprawling Romano estate.
We eagerly stepped out into the freezing night air, completely desperate to fill our burning lungs with fresh oxygen.

But our profound relief was instantly and violently shattered by the loud, unmistakable sound of a heavy shotgun being pumped.
Mrs. Keller, the strict and terrifying head housekeeper, stepped out from behind a massive oak tree with the weapon aimed directly at Ellie's chest.
